AE86 : 4AC -> 4AGE conversion on a budget

Hi all,

I'm just wondering if I could get some advice with a 4ac to 4age conversion.
Firstly I have a AE86 Sprinter, stock with a 4ac in it.

I have a feeling its going to die on me soon and would like a basic 4age setup, nothing fancy just a cheap 86kw 16V.

Ive seen some complete engine packages around for less than a grand.. Enging, LOOM and ECU. Just wondering how much more do I need than this?
I heard fuel pump? Anything else? Can I reuse my clutch, gearbox and all?

Finally.. how much would I be looking at for the labour for the entire conversion?
I dont know much about cars at all so I wlll need either an enthusiast or a workshop to do the install for me.

Anyone in Sydney up for the challenge?

Call a few places near by and get some quotes, make sure you know what will be involved in the swap so you don't get too shafted

Oh btw no matter how bad its sounding your 4ac will probably last another 500,000km

I just found a 4AGE 16v for sale. Guy told me that it is in good condtion, doesntblow smoke etc. $550 with loom and ecu. 220,000kms

220k km is the low end of the scale that most 4AGE's are at by now. When I was looking for one I drove 5 AE82's that had done over 350k and one that had done over 400k. Ended up finding one interstate with only 150k. That's sold now anyway.

$1000 is a pretty unrealistic figure. Your probably couldn't even do it yourself for that cheap.

Dude, this is such a simple swap. Just have a crak at it yaself!
First of all spend a few days searching all the toyota and AE86 forums and google for as much information as you can on the 4AG engine and doing the conversion, there is s**t loads of information around!
If you plan on doing a few more swaps or conversions then go out and buy a hydraulic engine crane from an auto shop, shouldn't be more than $250. or if it is a one off, go and hire one from kennards or something, for about $50. Just make sure everything is done and the 4AC is ready to pull out and the GE ready to bolt in before u hire, so u don't end up having to hire it for more than one day.
This swap can be done in a weekend.
Just get the car on flat ground, disconnect battery,jack the car up,secure it on stands, disconnect all wires, undo all gearbox bolts, engine mounts, fuel lines, throttle cable, water lines,and anything else linking the motor to the car, and remove the radiator.
Rip the 4AC out, swap the engine mounts from the 4AC to the 4AG, if its a RWD motor drop it in and do all bolts up. if its a FWD motor, track down a RWD intake, or have the FWD one cut and shut, then follow The Witzl's guide for chopping up the water lines.

It is going to be easier to modify the water lines with the engine out of the car.
Also if its a FWD motor you will need to purchase a spigot bearing, and remove your pressure plate, and flywheel and pop it in the back of the block, then replace flywheel, clutch and pressure plate!
Now with that all sorted out, drop the 4AG in, connect all water lines, replace radiator, and tighten all gearbox and engine mount bolts!
Now its time to sort out the fuel, the easiest and simplest way is to rip the fuel pump out of an AE82, cut the mounting bracket half way down and then use a straight piece of stainless steel, aluminim etc. and bolt it to each end of the cut bracket to extend it and get the pump sitting lower in the tank.Drop the AE86 tank and remove the old fuel pickup and the AE82 pump is a direct fit! you just need to cut one of the lines as it faces to the back of the car,make sure you use proper cutters, or you will end up with a pinched and blocked line!
This setup will give you fuel surge with about 5L or fuel left in the tank, but it is the simplest way. If it gives you issues you can worry about surge tanks & external pumps later!
Now that all the mechanicals are done its time for the confusing part!
Now you can either find a mate who is good at wiring and knows what hes doing, or give someone like slideshow a call and wait in line, or ask around and try find someone on here who can give you a hand wiring it up.
The least you can do for yourself is try the swap. Don't go paying some stingy workshop thousands of you hard earned $$$, for something you and a few mates can easily do over a weekend! If worse comes to worse and you somehow mess it up, there are plenty of people on here to offer you advice or even pop around and lend a hand for a BBQ and some beer!

Did mine about 2months ago (also 4ac --> 4age) with a mate and it's a fairly big job if everything is to be done properly. We changed over all the looms (headlight, dash and engine) and thats a big job in itself just because of having to pull the entire dash off. So that'd consume about $500 in labour alone

Save up a bit longer and do it properly Oh and i've also got my old 4ac still sitting at my mates place with g'box and all. Only has 84000km on it

just thought id add budget and engine conversion dont really go together, cos corners get cut, things that need replacing dont, the only moderately complex part of a 4ac-4age is the wiring, and thats not too hard in itself. you have it easy atleast you dont have to make engine mounts, make tailshaft and bash a fucking hole in your firewall

Its quite an easy conversion as a diy and a great learning step if you were to take it on yourself! You will find that the abudance of info on this type of conversion will be plentiful and all your questions along the way are just one post away on the forums.
The hardest part will be the wiring and fuel setup but its been done before and its all over the forums.

you dont have to change the whole front loom plus to change thwe whole fornt loom u need to buy a front cut which might mean more money cause wankers want heaps for the shitty front gaurds

if your goin to spend money on it i dont htink an engine that has 220km on it is worth it

others might but youmight aswell spend bit more and get something that might last 10 yrs not 5 yrs if u cant save much money then do not own sports cars
if u want to save abit then put a 20v in it costs abit more but least u have a younger engine

to pay someone to do the whole job you will look at 4000 to 5000 thats drive in drive out

all the small things u dont remember of the top of yr head always add up to over 1000 bucks

thats if you run it with no oil.

these things are amazing, will last forever.

4AC -> 4AGE is one of the easiest conversions to deal with.

biggest PITA is the fuel pump, switching from low pressure carby pump to high pressure EFI pump.
