Depends on which variant you start with. I'm willing to bet the electric seats on both sides in a sports luxury are uber heavy
Guys,
Just having some thoughts about what could be a good late model RWD IPRA spec race car and the IS200 springs to mind. Has anyone heard/seen the actual weight you could strip out of an IS200? I'm just trying to see if anyone has done this and if you could get 300-odd kg's out of the shell without resorting to lexan and cutting lots of holes in things.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Dave

Project megap00 - Gave up and sold up. Money tree died
Probably start with the lightest and try for maximum return. Basically need to get the car down to around 1000kgs to make it anywhere near worthwhile and I'm thinking 300kgs is a hell of a lot to lose.
300kg without cutting holes and going lexan, and lightweight panels, is going to be difficult if you start with the base model. Probably 150-180kg should be doable, but more may be a stretch. I think you would have to start spending big dollars on carbon fibre parts and saving kilos everywhere in the componentry.
You selling the ke25 then DaveThe is 200/Altezza would be a good platform as long as it can lose 300kg.Could also either run a 4 or 6
Heres some specs

rahter than 1s200 IU'd be saying RS200 or is300 (not sure how muc more the 300 weighs in at)... the 1g-fe is less than impressive :\ (depending on class rules)
How serious do you want to get? if it's going to be a dedicated track car, losing the aircon, sound system, interior trim, carpets, sound deadening...
I can see ~200 being doable without spending much/any money.
if you get desperate, electric window/mirror motors, heater core (not sure on the feasability of that one), side intrusion bars on the rear and passenger door
Nah, not selling, just dreaming at the possibilities of a late model car. Its going to be hard to try and get a late model car to go as hard as the ke25. I'd definitely run it as a 4, I don't think the weight penalty of the 2j would be worth the extra power, better to go for handling.Originally Posted by charged
I'd be looking at a dedicated track car with a full cage, so things like the side intrusion bars can go. I would be looking at a rs200 (copy) with a beams motor and a w58, same as what I have in the ke25 but without the turbo. IPRA allows replacing the motor with any of the same config (4cyl inline or 6cyl inline) from the same manufacturer, but since the rs/rs200 came as both the feeble motor (1g-fe) or the 3sge, I would obviously go for the 3s. Saves a heap of work as well as I have a fair few spares for a 3sOriginally Posted by Draven

This is why I thought I would put the question out there, has anyone done one or seen one done around the world?
Hi,
The real weight of an Aus delivered, 2000 model IS200 is around the 1400kg mark (measured with corner scales), at least 70kg heavier than the 1330kg dry weight.
Have a look at this thread for what can be done to one

There is a lot you can pull out that isn't there on older cars - things like power windows, power mirrors, power seats, sunroof, airbags, climate control, etc. When you're stripping a KE25 there's bugger all there to strip in the first place. An IS200 will have the usual stuff you can remove plus more - having said that, I have no idea how much weight that will actually remove. Personally I thought 1400kg is rather heavy for a small car, suggesting there's a lot of material in the shell itself.
There was a rumour floating around that RS200s have less body deadening material but I have nothing to back up the claim.

Hi Dave,
Bates have a genuine RS200 out at their workshop sometimes (I haven't been out there for a long time though).
I think?? (Someone could confirm?) they use it in tarmac events, possibly Targa?? Not sure how far stripped down it is though as I am not sure what regs it conforms to. That's the only one I have seen in Aus that was setup up for any sort of serious work.

If you mean Targa Tasmania, then I'm pretty sure their regs stipulate that you can only strip 10% from the cars original weight. So for the RS/IS200 about 140kg.Originally Posted by YLD-16L
Yeah Targa Tas, not sure if they ran in the last one but I'm pretty sure it was used in the one before that.Originally Posted by Lagstar

how much weight would you be adding with a cage?
- ma61 + 2jz-gte + v160 + 3.5 torsen
I've never had a caged car, but from memory when I was speaking to a friend with a caged RX7 he said they weighed the cage before fitment at around 35kg. It'll all depend on what thinkness you use and how many points or how complex it is. I'm pretty sure his was CAMS spec'd.
Yup, Bates used to run the RS200 in Targa Tassie. Did pretty damn well in it too.
I remember seeing it at the Harbour Rally as well. Sounded awesome.

Proably about 40kg odd, depending on how much bar work you want to do. With late model IPRA rules you can brace into the engine bay to pick up the front towers. Unfortunately you can't brace the rear towers completely.
Thanks for those pics off the Altezza club site, its very interesting to see things pulled apart. I would want to go further than he has and remove all underbody sound deadener, possibly even getting the shell dipped to maximise weight savings. Given that this is a theorical discuss anyway (my wife won't let me build another race car....yet).
I would like to do a similar spec to the RS200 with a 3sge motor but with a much more stripped down car. I believe that it was still relatively standard in terms of trim levels but I haven't seen the car close up myself to verify.
There would have to be 20-30kgs in the engine bay mainly due to the 2 less cylinders, most of the wiring loom could go (15-20kgs for a modern loom, replaced with about 5kgs), seats and general interior trim somewhere around 50-80kg, plastics under the car 5kg, exhaust 10kg, lighten up the diff by using a spool (10kg) etc etc.
