Clutches worth looking into for both daily driver/track

Loved the Exedy, as used by several of us in the GT4 community. although $700!
Direct Clutch can do a sprung centre button for $300 last i checked.

well i have gotten my car back with the sprung 6 puck Xtreme Clutch,

not too bad at all, needs a slightly different approach to taking off, need to be a bit more assertive with it (ie. take off relatively quickly)

haven't qite got the hang of it but it seems like an awesome clutch to drive with now

but it is worth ~700

What sort of pressure plate you using with it?

it is a heavy duty one, apparently ~30% greater clamp load then standard

oddly enough my clutch pedal is lighter now then with the stock one

When i was looking at them i asked Xtreme about the cushioned buttons, i was told they are exceptionally good at holding the power and driveability, but if you are to do high RPM launches they aren't the best option, as they are riveted and won't really slip, you can shear the rivets on the clutch plate and in an AWD every (decent) launch is high RPM

Hey im coming close to buying a clutch kit now. Engine parts are on their way in the post.

What comes in a clutch kit? Clutch disc, pressure plate and throwout bearing?
Ive looked at some clutch kits in Aus and people want like 1k+ for em
Is there any cheaper option, ordering from overseas perhaps?

Also, would a MR2 SW20 3SGTE(90 - 95) clutch kit fit the ST185 GT4? Being the same engine and all?

My Exedy button clutch came with
-clutch plate
-pressure plate
-throw out bearing (wrong one though)
cost me $700 trade.

Add the cost of installation, and flywheel machining.

MR2 and GT4 clutch kits are interchangable.

I have an Xtreme Button in my car, not too shabby at all

i think they retail at ~700 for the clutch kit, but once again ad the cost of installation and flywheel machining (unless you get a new flywheel as well)

i went the whole hog with the clutch and light weight flywheel...got them both cheap as the gf works at Autobarn (and i can't hook you up, so don't ask) but the clutch bites hard, but is still very driveable

haven't given it a launch yet, i would assume it will just spin the wheels, i could do that with a stock clutch that slipped, so a button that won't slip should do it better!

There's a seller on ebay selling a crap load of "Valeo" clutches. They are pretty cheap and apparently "30% heavier".

Does anyone have any experience with these in their cars?

First impression is dodgy ebay crap, but I guess I'm hoping that they are OK value for money.

Be careful with extra HD pressure plates.... ask the DSM 4G63 guys how HD pressure plates can cause crank walk........

Just to go back here, the problem with crank walk on the 4G63s isnt the HD pressure plate itself. Its a design issue with the crank girdles on them, which the HD pressure plate exaggerates and accelerates the crank issues.
Most if not all Toyotas dont have this issue.

Sorry to revive an oldish thread, but I've been speaking with a close mate who seems to swear by an unsprung 5 puck in his GT4. He's been through about 5 clutches and said in the end he tried unsprung and it was great, never mind. Though hes a brutal driver haha.

Anyhow he was saying that his sprung clutches would shake the shit out of the car when letting it out, but the unsprung didnt. What are your experiences with this sprung/unsprung 5 puck exedy users?

Unsprung clutches won't shudder as much but they do put way more shock loading through the drivetrain. Don't be surprised if your friend starts breaking expensive bits in the near future.
