The cam cover on the 2TG was an ok red but it was the wrong colour for the scheme so it had to go after I took it to the machine shop to be cleaned I got a little creative when I painted it and was REALLY pleased with the results (Before)
    (between)
(after) . So having completed painting the basics I moved on to getting everything I had spread out in order and so I could find everything when I needed it . Oh my carbies, donar Engines and lightened flywheel I found all at SLeeka spares and Dave has been a huge help through this process.

So after laying it all out, cleaning all the parts, then spraying it all with compressed air and a bit of WD40 (on moving or bare metal parts) I started the assembly.
Crank and bearings first ... I had hit my first problem. We needed the crank bearings with the attatched thrust washers so after a little delay I continued . With crank firmly bolted in and the dummy shaft inserted I placed on my timing sprockets for the bottom end and also inserted the oil pump.
I was off to a flying good start and quite proud of myself as this was the first engine build I had ever done. After fitting the oil filter and fuel pump as well as the backing plate i decided to call it a night and started again in the morning.

I woke up nice and early and moved onto the pistons my dad helped with the rings and putting them into position. . Ahhh quite tricky business rings. . . for a begginer . Welshies were next I chose to go with stainless steel upon the advice that the copper ones have funny reactions with the 3T block. it contrast beautifully tho. When dad had finished the rings we put the pistons in.
Head gasket and head were next after a quick check over the whole engine to check it was all good tidy and proper, oh yeah don't worry pistons were bolted in and the sump was put in place . So on went the head after I was content everything was in order (this included timing chain remaining cogs timing guides and face plate).

After I had set the cam timing and tightened it all in place I attatched the twin solex carbies oh yeah I added the finishing touches and threw on the cam cover. . . I then needed a change of pants as I was so exciting to be so nearly done I wet my pants. Ha ha ha not really but i was very very excited.

I again called it a day but was up bright and early the next morning as I had some things to do before i completed the job. As soon as i was done i was out under the garage again pulling out the hideous thing that my old 2T was apparently i had driven it into the ground I had evily driven it without coolant every third day. It had a very serious overheating problem forcing all my coolant out of the system as steam. As well as lack of oil due to a leak all adding up to a blown head gasket, no compression and a busted motor (secretly that was the plan i wanted to test just how toyota tough 2T's are. Long story short, it passed. . . well short example: pooraka to salisbury plains round bout 16KM without fluid or oil) in the end this is what it looked like . Ha ha ha btw don't do this youself its bad for them.

So out came the old and in went the new Oh yeah I used an "Extreme" heavy duty clutch too
After a bit of tinkering with timing, a blocked carbie and other general houskeeping I began the running in process. Then disaster struck you can see the damage and prognosis on my other thread "Serverly stumped 2TG/13T hybrid build". Thanks for reading guys and travelling along my journey when i do more on my car, like a paint job (even though i love my 72 shades of silver) i'll post it here. once again thanks for reading

    Hey,
How much did your Xtreme clutch cost you? And did you get one to suit a 2T or 3T flywheel?

Mmmm engine pics look good. Its a shame you had problems from it

Hey, gonna ask you more questions about the clutch how heavy is it on the pedal compared to a stock one? Just curious as, being a girl, im not quite as strong as the guys, but ive driven a commodore with a heavy duty clutch that my dad had, and i used to drive it daily no probs, just want to check with you what this one is like.
    Cheers.

The 2T/3T/2T-G flywheels can be machined for both sizes of clutch.

Dana, best bet is to take the flywheel into a clutch place and confirm that you can use or machine for and use the bigger clutch kit, so when you go to buy one ask the sales person to look for a listing for 2T and 3T motors and pick the one that is larger in diameter.

It would not be as heavy on the pedal as the commy one.

Any particular reason I would want the bigger clutch Rodger? Im happy to just get a 2TG one and not have to modify anything

    Dana,

The bigger of the two simply has more clamping area because of the larger diameter, so for a similar pedal feel you get a better clamp. Think like brakes and rotor size.

Hmmm makes sense... I thought 2T and 3T clutches were the same diameter, but just different dowel pin locations? Im sure someone mentioned it on classic celica thread, i'll have a look again and see if I am mistaken.
