i doubt your spigot would cause shuddering like your describing, they more like to squeal and carry on in that sort of fashion.

mind rattles and knocks on startup, i always thought it was the clutch plate, not the flywheel.

i guess the motor wasnt a fan of all those 8k+ RPM clutch dumps.

ill pull my inspection plates out and have a gander/wiggle.

thanks for the headsup on what to look for!

    Elmo.

After driving to work this morning im convinced its the input shaft bearing Yay for me Will have to find a replacement T50 to keep my car on the road whilst I have fun pulling apart my gearbox I think the shudder I got last night was my front wheel bearing on the verge of collapsing, couldnt hear it properly last night but I heard it this morning. God its always multiple problems at once with my car, and right when I need to be studying for next week's exam

Sounds like you have diagnosed your fault already sillycar chick.

Well, last night Turdinator and myself pulled the box off, to find that one of the strap positions on the pressure plate had broken completely. ALL 6 flywheel bolts have sheared at the crank too. Not looking forward to getting these ones out - They went in with super stud lock!

Interesting thing to note - All 4 times the clutches break the strap in the same position!

    Will post pics asap.

Was your engine Balanced when it was built ?

I sheared the flywheel off the 2/3TG inthe pornstar. As a result I had the flywheel dowelled to the Crank.

I also used the 3TGTE Grade 11 Toyota Flywheel bolts instead of the lower grade 2TG items.

I'd suggest dowlling your Flywheel and Crank AND going to the bigger 3T-GTE/1G flywheel and clutch combination.

I just spoke to exedy and they believe the bolts becoming loose, combined with the missing a gear is the cause of the clutch failures. They are happy to modify the clutch again, this time with 4 straps on each of the 3 points. The guy I spoke to also suggested doweling the flywheel. I was thinking I might use the ARP bolts, that Jamie from forcefed has already supplied to Sillycar Chick. Not super keen on putting more wieght into the rotating assy, with a bigger flywheel and clutch combo. This may counter the good work that the dowels/bolts may do? The whole rotating assy (crank, rods, clutch, fly..) was balanced when the motor was assembled. Seriously thinking of going down the 20v or Beams 3s at this point.....

    Eddie,

    Whats your flywheel weigh ?

I think you will find the bigger flywheel is 1kg lighter than what you have now

If your bolts are coming loose then something may be out of balance. Jasons KE20 turns 210kw at the tyres. It has no dowel pins, uses the stock 3T-GTE flywheel bolts and has no trouble maintaining the flywheel on the end of the crank.

ARP Bolts should be a good thing and may be cheaper than genuine Toyota ones too !

I may be pointing out the painfully obvious here, but something fundamental is wrong. Upgrading the clutch, using hardcore bolts, balancing things again seem to be addressing the symptoms, but not really the root cause.

Something is fishy and causing the flywheel and/or bolts to play silly buggers. I'm afraid I have no idea what it may be, but something must be up.

    Eddie,

Did you follow the Flywheel Bolt Torque steps that I gave you?

Balancing the engine again, isn't a symptom its potentially the cause of the problem but an expensive exercise to strip the motor down for re-balancing.

    True.

But if out of balance was causing these problems would there also be other symptoms? Nasty vibrations/noises?

Who wants to hear something interesting!!!?!!! Hen, you may be on the money. Spoke to someone who may have hit the nail on the head. What if the harmonics of this motor are causing these bolts to shear, in the higher rev range. The cast iron flywheel which I have has been lightened previously(Still a death trap), for some reason makes my motor the correct frequency for loosening(pulsing) things attached to the crank. Despite being balanced! It could well be the cause of my dramas!

Time for a proper lightened flywheel, or as you said, a new conversion...
