It's perfectly normal with an open diff. You'll find that when you spin one wheel, the other wheel spins in the opposite direction.
I just finished putting a T series rear end in my AE86, and now whenever the rear wheels are off the ground they can be turned easily by hand when the car is in gear?
But as soon as it is on all 4 wheels it seems to lock the rears like normal as I tried pushing the car and it wouldn't move.
I thought it might be something to do with a rooted centre, but it drives fine, a bit of diff whine but nothing major!
The tailshaft and diff are just standard JDM T series, still with standard open centre.
Can anyone explain to me why this is happening and if it is a bad sign?
Thanks heaps!

my god it runs again .
have you got it tuned properly yet
But Norbie, isnt having it in gear meant to lock the rear wheels? Im pretty sure it did with my S series?
hahaha yeh its running! its got a good tune at the moment, but the motor is so far fucked it gets worse every day! A rebuild is on the list of things to do!
Cheers.

in gear locks tailshaft in relation to crank .
open diff will use planetery and sun gears to let the rh wheel turn the opposite to the lh only a mech type locker will stop this.
think back maybe your handbrake was on .
something has to move..Originally Posted by WHITCHY

so.. if in gear, the other wheel will move.
if it's in nuetral and someone holds the other wheel, the tailshaft will move...
all good.

Clutch LSD will spin wheels the same way, provided the gearbox is in neutral. Torsen LSD will behave like an open diff, ie wheels spin in opposite directions.

sr rly?! so can have a lsd and act like a open on stands.
very interesting.

If it's a Torsen yes. Of course being hopeful that one has a Torsen diff instead of an open diff by spinning the wheels on jack stands is folly,![]()

All is true, this is normal behaviour for Torsen and open. Even a clutch pack LSD with sloppy clutches will allow you to spin a wheel.
Of course, if you put a torsen centre in the diff, then being hopeful that one has a Torsen instead of open isnt folly... unless you live in a dodgy neighbourhood where people are known to swap out centres in the middle of the night to get drug money

Nah, not always true either... I pulled a 2 wheel skid with my RA40 when I first bought it. Definitely open centre, though it was quite shagged, and possibly locking up

So how can you tell a Torsen then?
