An engine-driven fan will outflow any electric fan, provided it's in good working order (eg undamaged blades, viscous fluid intact).
hey guys my s13 has been overheating heaps when i flog it i still have the std fan i have upgraded the radiator to a ma70 item. im now thinking is their much gain in going to thermo's? if so what size and i see a few cars runs 2 would that be a good option
thanks
any help would be great

its in good order
so im better of sticking with the std one?
anyone got any other ideas to keep temp on the low?
The first thing to check is the condition of your radiator. It could be internally blocked with scale or the fins could be corroded/bent/missing. A new/recored radiator will likely fix the problem, or at least help.

Are you sure an engine driven fan will outflow a thermo?
I removed the good working order from my 4K and replaced it with a 12" thermo. It not only keeps the car cooler, but never overheats anymore.
Just a thought.

from memory k-series fans don't haev shrouds over them, therefore they aren't that efficient. as your thermo would be mounted hard against the radiator it would be more efficient.

Nah it had a fan shroud, but I figured since the thermo is hard-mounteds to the radiator it would have more effect. Works a treat too![]()
For old cars an electric fan may be an upgrade, but for something more modern with a big viscous-clutch engine fan you won't beat it with a pissy little 12v motor.

is your stock fan shrouded?
if you are relying on a fan to keep your engine cool then you have major cooling system issues, the only time a fan does anything is in burnout comps or sittinf at traffic lights.
i'd go thermos every time, as there is less parasitic drag on the engine, and it will rev (ever so slightly) freer.
are you sure that going to the supra radiator was an upgrade? what wast he problem with the standard radiator?
When you buy electric fans, always look at the CFM rating of the ones you have in mind. Also look at the current consumption of any semi-decent electric fans. Remember, too, that a fan is not there to constantly cool the engine, but mainly to help out when the car is hardly moving - no electric fan can pull a constant 150km/h breeze! Also note how many electric fans (i.e. none) you'll find on a Kenworth - something that has to be able to manage full load for hours while barely moving. Even at 24v, the current drawn to maintain that kind of airflow would be enormous.
im looking around for a ally radiator maybe 56mm
ill try pwr and keep the std fan
thanks
for you help
do std fans need balancing someone said they could get off balanced?
FWIW thermos give the equivalent of about 30km/h of airflow (measured).

i thought all fans were slightly unbalanced to begin withOriginally Posted by MZ20_drifter
every electric fan i see usually is, they have an odd number of blades and two of them are usually un-evenly spaced.

If you had thermos on this setup they'd never come on except if stopped in traffic for extended periods of timeOriginally Posted by MZ20_drifter
. I honestly doubt even in race track type thrashing they'd come on, I've given my car hell even on 45 degree days and when moving the temps just don't get high enough.
The PWR rads are designed so you can easily mount the stock fans back on, the only reason I didn't go that way was because I already had thermos and there wasn't enough room with the huge arse radiator in.
If in doubt power out
