Easiest way I found to get TDC for cylinder one is to use chalk to place a mark on the distributor body lining up with the spark plug lead for cylinder one, then un-clip the dizzy cap and rotate the engine using the crank bolt until the rotor points to the mark. Clip the cap back on, check for the timing mark on the pulley. After that, go with the instructions on the timing gun

I might have... Well sort of. I cut around the whole top part up to the airfilter. It actually made it go better. I've been told the air cleaner assembly (especially on the early models) really choke the engine up. The later shovelnose "hicam" 4kc's have that air intake pipe coming through the passenger guard.

The carby is super clean. its been rebuild at some stage because its got a company's sticker on it. I have a feeling it is the carby and its tuning though.

I am going to disconnect the piping after the extractors and take it for a drive to hopefully dispell my theory of the exhaust choking the engine.

I'll let you know how it goes
