It was, read to grind of 1/8", done that, cams are out of whack now and one of the cam cap nuts is threaded. Just one thing after another with this fucking motor.

Precision International (a parts supplier) can supply two different lengths of the top tentioner (shown in above picture - top of photo).
One appears to be too long, the other seems about right. I haven't looked at one for a while so my memory is a little foggy.

I forgot to read the paper that came with it, said to wind the new tensioner in until the chain had no play to spec, then measure the head to tensioner flange, then take that amount off the plunger.

The washer was still spinning (flange not even contacted the head, and I ground off about 17mm off the plunger. Unbelievable.

cut a small slot into the thickest part of the broken bit on the timing cover then using a chisel/screwy tap/hammer it see if it will turn out

i dont know if they make an easy out that big but might be another option

if that fails and you have access to a welder very carefully tak a bolt into it, cool of tak weld, make another, cool off that continue untill you have a good bind then undo

I'll give the welder a go, another day. I got 10 litres of 95 sitting next to the car, might do something stupid in my frame of mind atm. Thanks for the help.

I do remember looking at the threads on those tensioners thinking that the casting metal was probably not very good.
That seems to be the case.

It always to clean up threads before installing if they don't go in easily.

I hope you can solve your tensioner issue.
If I get time I'll have a lok around my place to see if I've got a spare.

Thanks heaps guys. My local auto shop has easy outs up to 19mm so that should be sufficient to get the broken bit out

yeah just be careful with the easy outs they will put signifigant outward force against that cast section before they bite and that may be enough to damage the threaded section on the timing cover

maybe even enough to crack it

i cant say for sure cause ive not had this problem

    BUT BE CAREFUL

I snapped one once. Cut a slot and used a hammer and pin punch.
