What does the 18RG(U in particular) redline to? The taco in my 18RC celica shows redline at just above 6000rpm...
Sorry if this has been answered before, I did a search of this thread and could not find anything helpful...

    Hi,

18R-G redlines at 7k. The tacho goes to 8K and the engine will rev up to there.

What?!?! No warning of impending doom if you take an 18RG to 7000+ rpm. That's just reckless OMR!

    Hi,

This is old school, matey. It depended upon the owner to be mature and operate the engine within the laws of newtonian physics of the universe.

Stock 18R-GU redline as mentioned is 7krpm. Get it balanced with lumpier cams and you can get mooooooore!!

i had an 18RG years ago (when i was younger and dumber) that i used to do burn outs on the farm in. Would sit on 8k+ for minutes on end. Used to do burn outs until tyres exploded (which in practice tends to be more of a gentle deflation instead of a "pop" or explosion). Would then change tyres and do another one
Remember the piles of rubber behind the wheel being on fire one hot day (technically it was a fire, but only enough to light a cigarette really)

Had an old concrete tank stand I would drive the car up to so i didn't have to use brakes. one wheel peel only of course, no LSD / locker.

the motor was still going strong when i (stupidly) sold it

Yup, they will rev that high, but the question was what the red line was... and factory red line was 7k, as this is what was deemed safe to run the motor to without causing excessive wear/damage. The practical limits are much higher.

Mind you for the 18R-C the red line is just above 6krpm, however the practical limit is more like 5krpm due to the shit cam and tractor head design...

ah yes correct Owen and noted, red line is different to what engine will do.
I was really replying to Rivers comment that it's up to the owner to "operate the engine within the laws of newtonian physics of the universe."
At the time i had that 18RG, I also had an 18RC that i used to do the same thing in at the same time, and it performed (to my untrained at the time eyes) just as well - ie: sat on 8k+ for minutes on end repeatedly over many months and loved it.
Brother and I were having burn out comps and would swap cars after each run
At the time had 3 Celicas on the farm, of which 1 was undrivable, 1 was RG and 1 was RC.

I have a TRD tacho that I bought from Japan in my #A40, redline starts at 8,000rpm, the old RG runs to 9k comfortably then runs out of puff, but hey, it is not your standard OE tacho or engine. I think it may have been from one of the A40's with the 152E 16valve race engines.

As has been said, the standard RG's should have a 7K redline.

    Hi,

Well, hearing some of you guys have taken your 18R-Gs over the universally accepted safe value of 3500rpm, I can now see why there's been a global change in weather... droughts.. floods.. tsunamis... male pattern baldness... increase of rangas being born.. and a host of other strange phenonamon (or however the fuck youi spell it).

I think of Redlines as a point which is where the engine starts to lose power.

A standard 18R-G will lose power from between 5800-6400 and will sound different when it starts to be less willing to go.
Revving above the point where the power drops would reduce the life of the engine for good reason.

If it's modified, that's different. Redline becomes what ever it has been built for (of course accounting for the limitations of stock components remaining in the engine).

    Hi,

Think of the red line like the Pirate's Code in Pirate's of the Carribean... it's more of a guide line.

Willofan, what speedo are you running there??

Steve... adjusting the cams can alter that drop off point... when my old RG was running right, she was well happy with 7krpm flat shifts

As was mine Owen. My 18RG would often rev past that when id change to quick for my hands and feet to move.

It is a 120+ mph speedo from a UK GT, it has kms in yellow inside the mph. The needle goes off the end of the scale going down EC front straight so I disconnected it.
