well this lightweight flywheel idea sounds like a good one... i've called toyhead in usa for shipping prices (they are on 'spring break'), and dcs in queensland (apparently getting back to me), and exedy in victoria (who don't stock they item, but will try to source me something) - anyone got any other places that might be good? ideally in victoria.
- also does anyone know how much the original flywheel weighs?

i've got my loose pants ready for the big day, and my car doesn't need an engine at all to shift the timeline back to 81' but i'm sure the rg will help.

River, an aftermarket flywheel would probably be a great investment for your car, if not for the weight saving, then for the added strength and durability. With the amount of power your car is capable of exerting, you are likely to wind up with a piece of flywheel through Riverina's leg the first time you show her what a real burnout looks like

You can get JUN chromoly flywheels for US$430, and I would trust that further than an aluminium item, though I haven't looked much into DCS yet, I'll give them a call today I think. I should have a look at what specs are in the 4340 steel.

My failing brain just recalled that the flywheel i used on my 3SGTE TA22 was an alloy one. A mate made it custom for his sports sedan but i snaffled it as my car was running 1st It was around the 4kg mark and worked sweet as with a W85 box and single plate button clutch. Even with the button clutch, shifts were nice and the car was fine to drive in traffic. That engine ended up making 270rwkw and saw 8000rpm at WP all day (well at least until we split the plenum ).

For my sedate driving style, and the minimal weight and subsequent performance increase of a lightened flywheel, it's not a wise investment for me.

I'd rather spend the dosh on getting the air-con fixed so I can cruise at 50kph around the 'burbs in comfort.

Will anybody be testing your car out at the drags River?? A flywheel fracturing at 6000rpm and letting go doesn't get stopped by bellhousings, floorpans, or legs.

Hi,

Trini is not being built with drag racing, motokhana, hill climbs, circuit racing or any other form of driving in mind except for daily, legal street use.

I enjoy the challenge of keeping the boost gauge on 0 as I drive about.

Furthermore, 6000rpm is achieveable by any stock 18R-G (assuming no affect on the time-line) so if a fly is going to let go, it will do it on a stocker as much as it would do it on a modded engine.

Not quite River. The increased power also increases the likelihood of clutch slipping, which in turn increases the temperature of the flywheel friction surface by huge amounts. The temperature increase is the cause of the flywheel letting go. The rotational speed then determines the severity of the consequences of said failure.

well my car has a different goal to your river, i pulled out my perfectly good working air con about 6 months ago to save on drag and weight... i've still got all the parts if anyone is interested.

after a bit more research i've decided billet steel or cro-mo is the way to go. something around 5kg... Direct Clutch in queensland have an option that is 6kg, but does not come with ring gear. everyone in the US is on spring break so info from there will have to wait. however JUN in Japan have a very nice 4.7kg cromo for jpy56500 posted (bout $650au) - thanks for all your input guys - toymods is great!

i rummaged through my tip pile, and this is the gear i've got - http://99sg.com/acgear.jpg (plus one bracket i found after taking the photo) stock stuff that came out of my ra40 (18rc). starting to corrode a bit cos i live near the beach and its been outside for 6 months - sorry i would have kept it under cover if i knew someone was going to use it... you're welcome to it river, either come pick it up from phillip island or i can post it all at your cost. I don't know much about posting heavy stuff like this, so no idea how much that would be. anyway, it was in good working order when i took it out of the car.

e-go.com.au is the cheapest by far for freighting stuff within the country.

bholmberg, not good about not having the ring gear. The JUN flywheel can be purchased cheaper from America than Japan (go figure) via the link I gave. US$430 works out to be about AU$464, can't imagine freight to be $185 for less than 5kg.

You need to read the bit where it says international shipping will be calculated upon request. Which means you need to email them...
