I dunno, I quite like the look of the mechanical setup, just something about it that appeals to me.

Saying that, I converted mine to cable because damn it's much nicer to use LOL

Ehh.. what are those stranglers on the carbs? Do not say they are air filters because they are not.Only effective way to lose say 20 hp..

How do you figure you will lose 20 HP filtering these carbs?

The air horns are curved around the top to increase the velocity of air going in and putting those strainers on kill that and thus losing power.
They are only effective to stop stones entering the engine.

I have a question regarding the W50, this is probably not the correct thread but i figured that those who have commented in here may know the answer.

I have 2 W50 gearboxes. one came with the 18r-geu i bought and was full of water. The other i just picked up recently has RN40 hilux written on the bell housing with paint pen. The bolt pattern appears to be the same but there is extra ribs on the hilux one where the celica one has a smooth bell housing. Also the hilux one has a similar looking shifter and housing to a w58 with the stick located further back where the celica one sticks straight up. There appears to be an extra sensor in the rear extension housing on the hilux one and it also appears to have no reverse lockout, so u can pull it straight down from 5th into reverse. The celica one wont let you and you need to drop into neutral then into reverse as per any normal gearbox.

The part number on the celica box is 33141-20090 where the hilux box is 33141-20100.
Does anybody know anything about these and have a source which explains the differences better? Are the ratios the same in both boxes? I plan on pulling them down and putting the celica shifter into the hilux one but i am curious about the ratios. The shifter in the celica box feels a bit nicer (once i free'd it up) and feels to have a shorter throw where the hilux one feels a bit flogged out. The celica one doesnt sound the nicest when rotating the input shaft but it does select all gears so i wont know the state of the internals until i pull it down. the celica one along with the motor has been sitting for the past 10 years and does appear to have much less k's on it. It did look like it may have had red shockproof oil in it...either that or the water made the oil change to look like shockproof. Again i should know when i strip it down.

    Any help would be appreciated.

The Hilux box has shorter ratios as you would expect. The flogged out feeling is probably the the plastic shifter bush having crapped itself?

Here is a manual for the W-50 Transmission that you can download if you decide to repair that transmission.

Hey Justen, do you know about the ratios for a fact or is that a guess? I would have thought that but i cant find anything that supports that. I can only find one set of ratios for W50.

I dont even know if the gearbox was original fitment to a hilux or it was just in one previous to being removed. I apparently the bell housing on these gearboxes in the ra40 celicas had the ribs like the one i have so the gearbox may have originally come from a later model celica. Thats why i was hoping there was some way i could know for sure based on the part numbers but alas my searching has been in vain.

here is a picture of my collection of boxes so far:

    hey Damien,
the W50, W52, W55 and W56 all found their way into a hilux of some sort. I confess my knowledge of ratios only comes from driving the things but i guess the short ratio feel could easily have been the diff ratio? A quick Wiki check suggests the ratios didn't go significantly shorter until the W56.

Just go a W58 and be done with it

The silver box in that photo above is a w58. i dont know the condition of her internally but it selects all gears and sound okay when rotating. The plan was to just check over the rg and do bare minimum to get it up and running. Slap a w50 on the back and chuck that in the celica. The plan was to then rebuild the rg down the track, clean up the ports and either try and track down some higher comp factory pistons or design my own set and machine them up from some forged billet. If or when i get to that stage i was gonna throw the w58 behind it.

however if getting a working w50 behind it is not as easy as planned then i will probably just skip straight to putting the w58 in it. As a bonus this box has the steel bearing plate which, from my quick inernet research, apparently makes it worth more even though they say is doesnt make them stronger. They have shelves of these things pulled apart at bullet from when they used to run then behind the NA bullets so even if this one needs some parts im sure to be able to fix it up without too much trouble.

The steel plate one is stronger. The plate, being the main gear set carrier, is more rigid and helps alleviate any alignment issues big torque setups can cause. Not that it saved the W58 I was running behind the UZ

Can anyone confirm if a thick black/white wire connects to the starter motor in a ra28.
the wire is located on the intake side near where the dizzy is?
i've got a wiring diagram, but it says black only, with no white strip.
or if you have a wiring diagram better than the haynes type, would be great.
i will do another search BTW.

Also, best place to get headwork done on a geu head, including re-seating, porting and re-grind 270 cams if possible?
Sydney CBD and work outwards from there.
