2tg thermo housing is passenger side is it not.
that makes that a 18RG
18RGEU has DOHC embossing I have since been told thanks to all.
FYI at least 6 18RG engines in or out of cars on Ebay at this time. Trying to find if any are early. One possibly with the tell tale "water leaking out of back of head gasket" Buyer beware that will be stripped 12MM fine thread metric for sure which is what brought the Toyota headed high compression engine to a terminal end.
At 9.7:1 my experience in high speed touring rally use was a succession of blown header tanks on the radiator necessitating a smaller crankshaft pully which caused less water flow and overheating in the rear of the head causing head gasket failure, rusting of fine pitch metric head bolt thread and ultimately thread failure.
it is highly unlikely anyone in Australia ever saw a Toyota headed 9.7 engine.
None ever came into API Springvale as I checked for months in 1980.
Rivers Celica might have one. My Corona had one which was removed and a Yamaha head 1975 model was fitted in its place.
One sad entry in my much thumbed 18RG engine repair manual is dated 1979 170/155/170/170.
rear cylinder leaked down like a seize.rear firewall covered in white bars leak..

I guess so. 18RGEU ...... had DOHC embossed and the oil filler is in that place on the 18RG.
Thanks all![]()

I am certain that one of my old 18RG's had the DOHC cast in the cam cover.
I also think (not much certainty with this one), that the oil filler was in two different locations across the 18RG range.
YelloRolla's KE20 1/4mi = 11.32 @ 119mph @ 22psi on slicks
12.44 @ 113 mph on 165 wide street tyres
210rwkw - not bad for a smelly 3TGTE running pump fuel.
2TG
As TA-022 said the 2TG thermo housing is on the passengers side of the car. Therefore, it is an 18RG.
And just for note the 18RG did have a DOHC cam cover available, I believe it was on the later model 18RGEU's
18RGEU
2TGEU
Note the location of the breather hole in both.
Finally, check out the stud pattern on both covers, even if they were the same length and width, they're not going to inter-change.

Correct, and i think i have one sitting around the place too. The "DOHC" embossed cam cover is from the 18R-GEU (RA63) engine.Originally Posted by TA-022

...... butt scratcher?!
I'm going to doubt this one, simply because i've only ever seen one type/location of oil filter mount on every 18R-G that i've ever seen (and thats a lot)Originally Posted by YelloRolla

This is my engine:
18R-G in a RA63. It came originally in this car.
More pics in my web page.
Oil filler not filter, and I am correct, they were at least available with the filler on the driver's side at the rear and the passenger's side at the rear.Originally Posted by The Witzl

1980RIP NATHAN BRETT DEAN2007,
I found something interesting the other day while looking at my new block.
The 18RGEUs that came with the two bolt oil pumps have an extra pair of engine mount holes. It appears that the rearmost hole from earlier blocks is shared, while another, more rearward hole has been added.
I reckon this might just make it easier to stick it into some cars with different cross members.
It would also help people identify if they have a two or three bolt oil pump, not that it really matters.
All I need now is to find the most suitable place for a turbo oil drain.
Strong like horse, smort like tractor!
