Compression and leak-down would be a major factor too.

ecu's would be the same, as was only released in japan. I think alot of the power difference would come down to the differnces between the three generations of 1g
I know the 3rd series has (slighty) bigger cams, turbos and a harder tune(more boost).
all these things would help the power levels, but i suspect that once you get serious and start bolting on larger turbos, manifolds and shit like that you would get the same power out of different motors, providing they had equal compression and clearances.

That's all Gen 1 data. Some of it's useful however.

The power levels people get from the engine varies greatly.

Theres people that have done $1000 worth of mods, and only get 150rwkw, then theres people with the engines stock, and they get about 190rwkw. Most of the engines seem to have done about the same amount of kms, and have seen the same amount of wear and tear, yet theres huge differences in power output.

Is there any specific reason for this?

Its the only thing stopping me from getting a 1GGTE, i could buy it, fit it, then find i only get 130rwkw, and have to spend big heaps to get about where i want.

    Any ideas?

    Totally wrong

Gen1 - Yellow Plugs, Yellow Injectors
Gen2 - Yellow Plugs, Yellow Injectors
Gen3 - Grey plugs (although can be yellow), Green Injectors

Gen1 and Gen2 are pin compatible, but the Gen1 ECU will complain there is no water pump
