    Default 89 4AGZE into '85 NA AW11 (engine mount problems) - SOLVED

    Alright, where to start...

Basically, this 4AGZE has had the SC removed, and been bombed nicely with cams, forgies, and i'm getting a new manifold made, to accommodate a new turbo etc.
I have run into a few problems though, when it comes time to install some nice engine mounts, here are before and after pics of the mounts:

    BEFORE:

    AFTER:

Now... we're not in heaven just yet, problems:

    1) (SOLVED (i think, opinions?)) Unbeknown to me, the engine had been installed by a previous owner with a NA front engine mount
(the mount above the pulleys). I got this engine mount re-set nicely, however the NA and SC mounts are different!

It's not all bad, becuase not only is the mount point on the engine different, but the chassis mount point is far skinner too (so the SC mount wont fit!)
so it's a good thing i got the NA mount remade, not the SC, as that would have required chassis mount modification. We managed to adapt the NA
mount to the SC engine as pictured below thanks to some beefy spacers (yellow). I think this should hold her in (the engine mount point difference will
be apparent when you see how i've adapted it). This is a "be aware" factor for anyone else doing the conversion.

    2) (UNSOLVED) The rest of the mounts seemed to go in without any problem (a bottle jack here and there for a bit of encouragement)..

HOWEVER, this is what concerned me when i went to check it out a few days after installation - the rear transmission mount (below)
seems to have a huge percentage of the engine weight on it (no wonder it was so f!@#ed when i took it out!)

Also, just to make the problem worse (please correct me if i'm wrong) if the engine spins clockwise when you look at the crank pully straight on,
the torque reaction will twist the engine anticlockwise.. this means under acceleration, this engine mount will be under EVEN MORE pressure. I feel sorry for the little guy.

Here is the best angle i could get:

I guess i'm wondering if anybody else has had the same problem(s)... And what avenue(s) they took to correct them. It doesn't appear this
engine mount will last too long if nothing is done about it's unfair treatment.

    What do you think guys?

the s/c gearbox mount is different to the n/a one so the gearbox will sit lower than the engine by about an inch or so which puts stress on the cv also at full travel the cv will hit the rear subframe

the rear torque mount on the s/c has 4 bolt holes 2 that go verticially into the chassis and 2 horizontially also from side on it shapes like this __| whereas the n/a mount and chassis only has 2 vertical bolt holes and is shaped like this __

However you can use either the n/a or s/c mounts for the front rear torque mounts and the engine mount however the gearbox mount will need modification to fit the n/a chassis or alternativley you can cut the whole chassis mount and battery tray out and graft a s/c one in

that engine side mount looks like there something isnt right there my gze engine and chassis mount bolted up exactly the same as the n/a engine mount

try elongating the mount holes with a die grinder/dremel to take the pressure off them

YES! it looks like this has been happening before, i thought it was just because the mounts were screwed.

I thought this problem would be over when i got the mounts re-done... There is still bugger all clearance:

ecotechilux: If the mount moves any lower, the CV will rub as it did before when the mount was stuffed....

no if you modify the s/c gearbox mount then the transmission will sit higher and the motor/gearbox should sit level

basicially you need a custom mount the s/c transmission is physicially bigger than the n/a gearbox so you need to modify the mount so the gearbox will sit higher and closer to the chassis

I don't know what you mean by the "gearbox mount", there are 3. Do you mean modify the top gearbox mount, the one beneath the battery?

    This one:

As far as i know this is unmodified, the rubber has been removed, and a new compound set in place.. Also i cant imageine how it can be modified to bring the tramsmission any higher... Have you done this modification?

    Got any pictures of how?

i never got arround to doing it but it HAS been done before many times over try logging onto mr2oc.com there are pleanty of people who have done this conversion and they may have pictures

but if your unsure of how to do it yourself it might be worth paying a few $$ to have a workshop do it for you

WOW i may have found a solution....

This is the top transmissions mount setup on my other 4AGZE installation - I got this mount as part of the engine package (that'd come out of a modified AW11)... So perhaps this mount has been modified already!

Could this be the successfully modified version of the mount to accomodate an E51 in a NA shell???

Bare in mind this mount bolted very nicely into an 87 NA body..

Bare in mind ALSO that the 87 body accomodated the thicker (fatter) version of the front engine mount (GZE?), where the 3 bolts connect a common flat plane, unlike the one i had to adapt. It looks like my '86 only supported the skinnier mount (GE?) with the middle bolt ~16mm higher.

This says there is a difference between the mount points on the chassis between 86' and '87.

I wonder if it makes a difference that the '86 was an import???
    My bodys:
    86 = AW11-0048954
    87 = AW11-0131847

Dont know if these numbers actually mean anything... Do they?
