Default Attn: Machining fags : )

    Hi Lads,

Can anyone recommend some lathework/milling textbooks, even DVD's?

Would be nice to find something aimed at the hobby'ist with a small project at the end of each chapter, that compounds as the book moves on. Rex is sure you know what He means.

He has access to some of TAFE textbooks, but they are generally big on theory, small on the practical stuff.

    Cheers

    Rex

One of the guys at work has a FAG Bearing stubbie holder at work. It's covered in fluffy pink material

Meh, the title will stay. If Rex changes it it will prove incontrovertibly that no-one has a sense of humor and P/C'ness runs rampant over our civil liberties. It even has one of those smiley things at the end, what more can one do...

Tafe, He is already there, but doing engineering (design). If manufacturing comes up as an elective Rex will enroll in a heartbeat.

could do what I am doing, dont know if it would work in that state though:

I enrolled and did only part of a course, ie: picked a module out (general machining) and did that on its own. This is normally reserved for apprentices that have failed and need to do it again in their own time

yup, thats me. tragically born without a sense of humour . Makes life a bit hard sometimes though

Rex when i did my machining apprenticeship part of my training involved a TAFE course called Certificate 3 in Mechanical Engineering. This involved some 960 hours of study, but if you dont want to be a full fledged machinist then you can go to night school and just pick a module or two out of the whole course.

The module i would recomend for you is called 'MEM 7.6 Perform Lathe Operations' (at least in victoria anyway, not sure about other states.)

This module runs for 40 hrs, and in victoria is charged at $1.34 per hour. They will teach you all the basics of machining, prac and theory, as well as giving you a workbook full of technical info and access to their library full of machining goodies.

The tafe i went to would do their night courses 1 night a week for 4 hours.

Or you could buy this book

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Complete-Fitt...QQcmdZViewItem

This is the book fitter and turner apprentices use throughout their apprenticeship. Its full of tech info and procedures, but sadly no projects at end of chapter.

Hey Rex, over at Regency tafe they do night courses that start out with basic lathe, then moves on to more advanced lathe work, they also do the same with milling. I think they start the course 2 times a year, at beginning of year and half way thru. Just go to engineering dept they will help you out.
