leave your alternator alone and get one of these:

Although we might hate to admit it there is a some merit in this idea. It is used on the new BMW M3 v8 engine(and possibly others as well, i dont know for sure) where it essentially does stop the alternator from charging under heavy throttle loads and where possible, under cruise conditions. It also works in a regenerative manner in that under braking it will always charge the battery. This is caried out, however, through the use of VERY complicated and VERY intergrated control systems throughout the complete vehicle.

IIRC They also use glass mat, lead calcium batteries, also very large and expensive batteries for that size car to handle the inconsistant charging. Furthermore they have all kinds of battery charge monitors ect that work to maintain the battery at useful level of charge under all circumstances.

So basically, is a retrofit practical... No.
If you are that concerned about power losses through your ancillaries then get an under drive pulley kit (that also has its disadvantages). Otherwise you will go faster by only filling your tank halfway to save weight and turning the heater and stereo off.

i added an extra 4 gauge wire from the alternator directly to the battery's positive terminal with a 150 amp fuse close to the battery side.. that seemed to increase electrical flow somewhat and reduces load / drain on the car's electrical system. Makes the throttle response lighter as well but it might be a placebo effect

a switch could do something, but i don't really wanna kill the battery. Having a switch as well.. erm... does it mean u have to turn off car before flicking on the switch? is there a problem with spiking etc etc.... BMW have done it with a lot more gizmos and such for a reason i thinks, but overkill or safety?

Under most circumstances the load on the alternator is quite small. You could acheive the same effect by turning off your headlights, stereo, AC fan etc, so the only load on the alternator is the fuel pump, ECU and ignition. I seriously doubt it would take anywhere near 5hp to drive those things.

I've seen racecars with this set-up. They use the brake light circuit to excite the alt and charge the battery only when the brakes are on (ie decelerating).

This has been used for many years and seems to work, to what degree tho is anyones guess.

I'd have the battery charger hooked up between races tho......

I'd prefer bolting a larger pullly to the alt...

I've been curious as to how much load all the ancillaries(PS, A/C, Alt. + pulleys) and the belt put on an engine. In my case a 1UZ. So when I got back to the dyno in a few weeks(after a few more mods) I'm planning to take off the main serpentine belt for a run or two and see how much change I get from a normal consistant run, if any. As people know the main belt on the 1UZ is very easy to remove and replace so it's no hassle. I'm thinking up to 2 - 3KW maybe. It'll be interesting to see.
