There seems to be an imperfection on the right hand side of the main bearing cap in that last photo. Its where the crank journal meets the bearing cap.
I can't get enough resolution on it to see what it is but it doesn't look right.

Hey Andrew - did you get the email I sent? If so post the pic with the highlighted area and you might get some further opinions.
Pic from Lukey is Here
Thanks
Andrew
doesnt seem to look so un usuall to me. Pston isnt seized? no bearing caps have turned purple? was there any debri in the sump?
Nothing in the sump.
No idea on seized pistons, havent pulled any out yet.
Was hoping the mechanic would be here today, hopefully he will drop by tomorrow.
Nothing that i could see was purple, you should be able to see pretty well everything in the pics i took.
Thanks
Andrew
Had a customer bend a crank in his rb26. We couldnt tell what he had done until we pulled it down. Even after all the slugs were out and the main caps were off we couldnt turn it over. So perhaps you should bight the bullet and start pulling rod caps and main caps off.
Wooo,
The engine turns again!
I tried removing the bottom half of the pistons yesterday, and couldnt even budge the nut.
I tried forcing the engine to spin with my 19mm ring spanner, and snapped my spanner![]()
I decided it was time to leave it alone.
Today i decided i needed an air powered ratchet. went and had a look at Super Cheap, and got a 5 piece thing for $99.
Got home and tried the air ratchet, and nothing. tried the air impact gun and the nuts came straight off.
Did piston 1 first, moved up fine, piston 2 i couldnt get a nut off so i left it, 3 was fine, 4 after removing the nuts took a lot of effort to get it to move from the crank. finally got the other nut off 2 and it was fine.
I removed the lower halves, and had a look. 1, 2, 3, were fine. 4 had the slippers? at 90deg to all the other ones.
managed to be able to turn the crank now with a socket! that was further then i could get before!!
Turned it enough that i could get the 4th piston off the crank properly and have a look at the slippers.
Pics are Here.
All are under the name problem.
Anyway! i think i found my issue.
Next problem?
Is there going to be an issue with the markings on the crank?
If i have to replace the crankshaft, im sure thats going to be fun, and probably expensive for me.
More advice needed!
But at least i found the fault.
Thanks Guys
Andrew
You will most definantly need to get the crank ground. Also may have to get the rods resized. It may be cheaper to find a wrecker that can supply you a motor or crank with standard size journals, usually 22r's are very common and no worries to find a good crank for $50. Which will turn out cheaper then a crank grind.
This is usually the result of grit or debri going through the oil system, or lack of oil. So measures should be taken to make sure that the oil system is flushed so that it doesnt happen agen. However if the engine is removed from the car and properly rebuilt this will be done anyway. It may work out cheaper for you to buy a second hand motor and do a straight swap.
22R cost around here is about $1300.
From what ive read in other post by other toymods members, thats not uncommon all over oz.
My plan with this car was to do a 1G conversion in the not to distant future, but im not quite ready for that. I need it to be running reliably for another 6-12 months, and i dont want to spend big heaps on it.
I could probably get ahold of a 22R-e motor from u pullit, but problem with engines from there is you dont get to test them.
On the other hand, i could get a crank out of it, and get it fitted.
Im not really keen on spending any more then $500 on this to get it running again.
Ill look in to it some more.
Any ideas on what kind of damage i would end up with if i just reslippered it and kept going? its dodgy i know, but i dont want to spend big heaps..
Andrew
buy a shittier daily and do the 1G conversion now![]()
At the moment, i have a defect YN57, a not working RN85, and a AE92 that my partner drives, Im also in a rental property, and am not supposed to be working on cars.
I have $1500 saved, and i cant afford to buy both another engine, and another car that may die as well.
I also have an engagement party to pay for in the next month, and just paid back $2800 worth of tax and other bills.
Electricity, phone, and other bills are due again in the next 2 weeks, and i only get paid monthly.
Im about to get screwed money wise, and cant afford to be spending money on another car that i will not know if its reliable.
I did think about it though..
Andrew
If thats the case,
Heres what you can do. Although i hate to say this i will.
Leave pistons up in the bore as they are, get aprox a foot long length of emry paper around 240-260 grit and use this to polish the crank journals. There should be no high spots left at all. only pitting and scracthes. Finish this texture with scotchbright.
replace bearings, re-install caps. It may be worth while to replace your main bearings aswell, certainly wouldnt hurt to take one of for a peep anyway just incase these are not to fair off seizing also.
This will get your out of trouble for the meantime. However its important to keep the oil up to it and definantly not flog it.
