    Pull the valve cover and look at the valve clearance. If it it way too big, then that is all the "proof" you need.

    a leak down tester will tell you if the valves are leaking and whether inlet or exhaust side are doing it, not only ring/piston leakage, and it will tell you how much they are leaking
