You need to see the footage from last years Qld round of the Dutton Rally with the manual cruiser than ran deep into the 12's and put on quite a smokeshow in a few eventsThey reckoned it was the third one they'd turbo'd.
Ok so I was watching some videos on youtube of a late model nissan patrol cruising around some arab country with a T51R strapped to the side of the 4.8.
Obviously big turbo on 1FZ-FE is extremely awesome as sean has proven but I was having wet dreams of that sort of package still living inside the cruiser...
I will never build anything automatic again so obviously it would need some sort of custom clutch to deal with that sort of tourque levels, how well is the gearbox going to hold up to that kind of power as well
Power goal would be from 350-400rwkw, easily doable with a GT45 id imagine...
discuss....

was it RWD only?
I wonder what the chances of a gearbox holding together in full time 4WD...

My dads cruiser ute still has the standard box behind a 454 chev ( about 460 hp, 520 lb.ft from memory ). Although, this is the hino light truck box which came in some 75 series utes.
Clutch is only a heavy duty pressure plate and a full face disk. Holds well pulling 2.5 tonne worth of float. Remember the clutches are rediculously big to start with, so there is a lot of surface area there to bite on.
I can't see the 1FZ and GT42 being too much of a problem unless burnouts or 3500RPM clutch dumps are your thing.
Nah it looked like it did the 1/4 in the wet in 4WD when you watched it on TV.
Come to think of it I think one of the tight coursed events it had wheels smoking on the frotn out of the real tight turns.
I might still have the one hour clip of the Dutton on my hard drive, if so I can chuck it on a disk if you want? There are only a couple of bits of the cruiser in that hour though.

thats some good insight there boxh34d...id say a 454 would be making the sort of tourque you would get from a turbocharged 4.5....and id be lying if i said I would build a car like this for anything other than chopping people...i dont really have much stuff to tow around and I dont go 4WDing all that often it would probably be fun for 12 months where the first 6 months involved building it and then the next 6 I would go around to every dyno day in SA and take home some 1st place trophies...combined with chopping almost everyone on AIR...

burnouts in a 4wd are near impossible...so id give up on that...the clutch dumps might hurt though...our roads are only so long and catching that riceboy in the WRX can only be so possible...

I think its an AWSOME idea! I saw a guy a few weeks ago in a cruiser booting it through the amber lights. I think it was a petrol turbo cos it sounded tough and he was flying.
Top idea!
My old man has a troupie with 4.5 diesel in it. Ive been trying to talk him into turboing it for some awsome torque levels. But he says he wants to wait for the new cruiser to come out with a 5 liter turbo diesel! Awsome, thats even better!
HZJ75, RS41, JZZ30
they are out now but are only 4.5l
do it now....

On second thoughts, get a ragtop SWB cruiser-like a late 70's one and do the 1FZ + turbo.
Lighter, and with the top down, waaaaay cooler. With good rubber it would lift the front wheels on the road.

80 series are renowned for having tough gearboxes and clutches, i think they may even use them in some high end 4WD 100 series, i know they put them in 60 series.

BULL SHIT!!! my cruiser does it no problems and its got a tired 350 in it,
