    Default lazy auto

I recently purchased an RA40 with a 3 speed auto box that is quite lazy. It takes longer than normal to go into reverse and doesn't feel like it's properly engaged in drive when I take off at first (does engage properly within a few seconds though). I'm going to dump the trans fluid when I do the rest of the oils this weekend but I wonder if anyone has any explanation for this sort of behaviour?

please don't submit posts telling me to do a auto-->manual swap, we're talking about a $400 car that's being used to get from A-->B only.

Most auto problems are related to fluid, it might not have enough in there

I think those also have a kickdown cable which needs to be adjusted correctly for the auto to kick down gears as it should... but that should have nothing to do with reverse so I'd be thinking it's more likely fluid related

See how it persists after you change the fluids on the weekend and go from there

the hesitation to get into a gear sounds like fluid, i had that problem with my auto lancer, just filled it up and no problems (as dale already pointed out)

Our camry was behaving in a similar manner, particularly with reverse.

A fluid & filter change cured it, no probs since I did it 12 mths ago.

    Cheers.
