Are you sure we are heading to Cairns?
I thought we were going to Mt Isa from Townsville?
    Cairns is a helluva detour.

Also, I've got a mate that lives 2hrs west of Mackay, so he may come to Mackay to meet us for lunch or something (depends what day we are there)

    Stupid shaped internet at home

Cairns is a helluva detour. It was a request from Steph, I'll have a discussion with her about it, i'll put it in km's and see what she wants to do.

    Mackay sounds good.

Townsville to Mt Isa is 900km
Townsville to Cairns to Mt Isa is 1450km
Townsville to Cairns to Normanton to Mt Isa is 1500km (might be more to see this way?)

I don't think the extra km's would be a problem, its more a timing thing. You'd want to get to Cairns late in the arvo and spend the night there, as opposed to rushing through it at lunchtime.

There is a whole day in the plan to relax at Cairns. There is no doubt it's a massive drive to accomodate. I'll check what I had in the plan when I get home.

It's 31 days as is. I think I'd broken that section up into:
    This: http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&s...63&ie=UTF8&z=7

    Then: http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&s...8,9.887695&z=7

    Total: 1066 + 1176 = 2242km with a rest day in the middle

The route to Mt Isa via Normanton appears to have basically no decent fuel. What are your thoughts on this?

Yeah, the 'Highway 1" on that route isn't an official highway yet.

Hmm, interesting. Is there really much to see up that way? There is no 98RON on that route. Going the other way, we have Hughenden and Richmond which basically break the trip in two.

No idea to tell you the truth.
It just looked more populated that the southern route at first glance. (especially that bit that travels south on the southern route, that almost looks like a dirt road at first glance).

But after a bit of reading it sounds like a new road thats gone in purely to service Normanton. But we should be able to get from the Forty Mile turnoff to Normanton (assuming there is fuel in Normanton). And I know I'd be happy to run on 95RON. Worst case just get some booster when we leave Cairns.

Time to bump this thread into 2010 (Nath can you rename the thread?)

Its on like Donkey Kong this year.

Nathan and I are busy busy starting to get our cars ready to go (and by that I mean he's preparing for his conversion, and I'm starting to buy parts to put mine back together...)

    Rough outline
7 days from ADL to Syd via TAS
5 days in Syd incl Fest, Lowenbrau, day trip to Bathurst.
And then roughly 2.5 weeks back to Perth via QLD and NT.

    Sounds fun? I hope so.

We are looking for more people to come
