Sorry for the dig,but if anyone is intrested in building a 7AGE and only rods are holding them back please contact me!
I may as well add my 10 cents worth.......
I've built several 7A's with special rods.
I have only a few bad experiences with stock 7A rods failing in near new engines, but that was a bad batch Toyota got many years ago. most 7A engines are used by grannies and its not an issue.
All the 7A race engines I've been involved with, have non-standard rods (like Argo etc) and they have never been been a problem. I have also made up a couple of 7A engine based on other production rods, but thats a lot of work.
offset grinding the 7A crank is not a problem at all, but its pointless unless you have the special rods & pistons to match.
dont forget the 7A crank has the oil passages drilled differently to a 4AG , so you have to stick with the unique 7A bearings. In many ways they are better anyhow.
I regularly modify the stock 7A rods to accept floating 4AG pistons and machine the block deck to get the compression right with 20V heads. This is perfectly OK for 7A 20V street engines .
I never get concerned about squirters on NA engines. the rod slot on the blactop 20V can be incorporated into other rods, but it requires subtle changes to the oiling system.
