    howdy howdy!

well just got the call from my mechanic advising me what I need to pick up for the ST205 engine/gearbox Ive got being rebuilt, wanted to get eceryones opinions on the prices I've found, and help on a couple bits as I cant find em, let me know what you think

Clutch - Exedy Ceramic Button TM012SR - $2240 from Tumbi Clutches
Pistons - CP Forged Pistons 20 thou oversized - $980 from Tweakit.net (anyone know how thick head gasket i need for 8.5:1 compression for this? 1.7mm I understand? its negatice 8.8 dish im told o nthese pistons)
Pivot Arm - ~$100 from Castle Hill Toyota
Timing Belt Tensioner - havent checked, assuming i can get this from castle hill too?
Chrome-moly piston rings (not gapless) - no idea where to get these, ones with the pistons are nitrided steel and duraflex
Gasket and Seal kit - $340 from CH Toyota
Head Gasket - again no idea
ARP head studs and main studs - $255 each from tweakit.net
Conrods - Eagle HBeam Forgies $790 from tweakit.net
Main abd bigend bearings 10 thou undersize - no idea

The price for the Exedy clutch seems a bit overboard for a part only. Recently bought a Excedy ceramic button clutch for a 3sgte for closer to one tenth that price. Id have to check exactly what the part no was but was def two hundred and something fo the kit.

Im not sure what "gasket & seal" kit you are refering to either but to the best of my knowledge the only "kit" is a VRS (valve reseat?) kit, which will include your head gasket, manifold gaskets, cam cover seals & other misc seals required to do the head.

FYI, my mate who drives the 130fwKw 3SGTE finds the ceramic button clutch is a bit bitey for daily driving...

what sorta hp are you aiming for with this?

the Gen 3 pistons are something of a halfway house between cast and forged (hyper euctectic is what they are called) and as such are fairly capable of decent hp (sikx5 on this forum has ~210awkw with stock pistons)

of course forged pistons are lighter, so the motor will rev a little easier and make a lil bit more power, but not heaps!

Also with regard to compression ratio, i wouldn't be too worried if it is ~9:1, it still isn't that high, and you just tune it with less ignition advance on boost.

and yeah i agree that clutch sounds way to expensive i wouldn't think it should be over 1000 really.

tho mic*, where did you get one for like 200??

    Cheers
    Nathan

can vouch for the st205 rods - mine ran them with the gen2.5 hybrid engine - they are plenty up t the task for anything less than a full race/dragspec motor ..

I know of some other examples still running them , and stock pistons , that are putting out in excess of 250 AWKW at the wheels . Stick with stock rods - get the forged pistons , and youll be set ..

Oh - i ran a single ceramic job in mine - daily use it was a teeny bit heavy and quite bitey , but well up to handling the task - that cost me less than 400 new on a engine that was built to spec to handle around 400 HP at the flywheel daily

I run a standard organic plate about $80 and a 25% upgrade pressure plate under $200 maybe $150 from memory 80,000km old still holds over 200fw kws and gets abused badly towing heavy trailers up my steep driveway almost everyday, no way i would buy a ceramic clutch for a 3sgte unless the whole setup was built for crazy power

I am currently freshening up my 3sgte simialrly to yours.

You can do better for the forgies i got Eagle H beam Rods and Wisco Pistons 40thou oversise for $1300 the pistons included the rings.

Anyway it all depends how much power you aiming for, if its just a rebuild you would probably just be better to leave most of the things stock or if you are planning big HP in a few years (like me) still just leave most things stock because when you start chasing big hp the engine will still need a freshen up anyway and thus new parts.

The cluch is also steep i got a ceramic button clutch for my commodore for $400, if thats anything to go by but it seems the verdict is that its way steep anyway

Anyway i hope that my dribble has been helpful

80 bucks?, 200fwkw... how does a 80 dollar clutch take more than double the power it was built to take plus extra abuse.

if so ive been gettin ripped haha.

a commodore is not anything to go by, there like arseholes everyones got one so everythings cheaper because its mass produced, the word custom and import skyrockets the price but 2000 is ridiculous unless its a big twin plate unbreakable thing.

the clutch exedy recommended when i called them was a TM012SR, twin plate ceramic button clutch - looking at 200 awkw by the end of the year, and 300awkw by sometime mid next year. from the sounds of things they went straight for the 300awkw recommendation. thinking maybe of going back to the TYK-6441SC which is a Sport Cerametallic clutch, researching now

i used the exedy button clutch, and loved it...

although you can get the same type of setup from direct clutch at half the price (exedy was $700, direct clutch was $300)...

If you're planning on getting 300rwkw I'd advise stroking it and getting the block sonically tested to ensure the bores are thick enough to handle it.

I'd also advise getting 1mm oversize valves and some decent cams.

    .
i think $80 was trade could be 90 something retail, my gen3 made 165fwkw stock+exhaust so 206fwkw is only about 25% more. if you are realistically chasing 300aw kws the a ceramic is probably the go.
I recon my basically stock clutch setup has more in it, still feels really solid, but very nice to drive I think my stock ecu will become the limiting factor first

The Ogura 409D clutch kit retails for about $1300 and includes clutch, flywheel, and clutch cover. Its meant to be able to handle 500kw and 400Nm of torque (those specs may be thw wrong way round).

User reports on this forum indicate that pedal feel is about the same or even better than stock.

Maybe something to look into. Also Xtreme Clutches from Adelaide also do a decent multi plate but like ppl have said, unless your going for huge power (like 300kw) the widely held advice is to steer clear of brass buttons for daily drivers. Since you have stated you ARE aiming in this range, it comes down to whether you can live with it.

Either way the intitial quote on the Exedy was way inflated given the alternatives...
