    Default Valve Clearance for a 2S-C (in an SA63 '84 celica)

    Hey guys

    im sittin here checkin out the manual i have for my model of celica......(well, i picked it up in another one at the wreckers lol)......and trying to suss out correct valve clearances, and my engine isnt listed in here at all

    i jus went and had a squiz under my bonnet....and i'd never noticed it before but there's a sticker on the underside of the bonnet itself....listed valve clearance and spark plug gap.......gap was 0.8mil......but for the clearance it said "not adjustable"....or...something to that effect i think

    how come ALL of the engines in this manual (there're 5 different models listed) have specs....yet, i cant find one for the 2S-C (i believe its just the australian model)

    pretty much gettin ready to service her again.....do petrol, oil, air filters.....as well as sussin out spark plugs and doin an oil change..brake n clutch fluid etc.....i plan to get the timing belt checked too, have access to a gun ,and an uncle with the know-how....(miss anything to check? other than tyre pressure)

    and i'd like to check out the valve clearance........reason i do...is because in commenting on a noise i heard, my father explained a slightly off clearance could be the reason for the noise.....

    the noise - when i reach 3000rpm, i can hear a bit of a ticking.....go over 3k, subsides, and a little higher revs, comes back again, but pretty much, at 3k on the dot, it'll tick a little bit........(nothing to do with running unleaded in leaded engine, i do put in the treatment stuff all the time, have that sussed out)

    any tips on where to find the specs for that valve clearance would be sweet...cheers in advance for the response guys

    - jacob

    (btw....if anyone in brissie wants to hear 143 db in a poor old celica....let me know )

    I could never find a workshop manual for the SA63, i got a Corona manual, as that has the 2sc but with a different gearbox, i'll try and find it.

    a Gregory's Corona ST141 manual is what you want. Valve stem to guide clearance:
    Inlet=0.025-0.080mm
    Exhaust=0.030-0.100mm

    LOL
    They do not have a clearance because they are hydraulic self adjusting lifters (there is no where to adjust)
    If you are getting tappet noise then maybe one (or more) lifters are stuffed and need replacing.
    Hope this helps

    Had the same problem. Yes they are hydraulic lifters. Put some lifter cleaner in with your oil and after next oil change it should quiet down.

    Back in the day, some of those engines would stall on the highway for "unknown" reasons.

    Turned out what was happening was carbon buildup on the valve stems would cause the lifters to pump up, killing compression.

    The vehicle would stall and would not restart until the lifters had bled down. It made for a real bastard to diagnose, as the car would always run by the time it got towed to the dealership. It was most common on cars that were not run hard, it probably doesn't apply to anyone here!

    To be sure! Never had mine stall on me but it did make a hideous noise. Thus making my anger increase which in proportion increased the revs! So as you say it was probably good to have treated it so harshly.
