    Default Car alarm question

hey, im thinking of getting a new alarm for my car.. Im looking at one on e-bay, with remote start, and a whole bunch of other shit..

Anyway it says the remote start only works on automatic cars.. Why? i understand that its just in case you left your car in gear as a safety thing, but is this possible to bypass to make em work on manuals?

Im thinking that it would just be a wire connected to a sensor, which detects when the car is placed in N.. If so could this be modified to make the sensor read when the selector is in neutral position, or bypass the sender all together, allowing the car to remote start anytime?

Anyone dealt with this before or know how it works..

    Cheers

I don't know how it works - but I've seen them on a few manuals before. One of which used to cut out when you accidentally left the car in gear, so there wasn't a chance of your car driving away on you...

I bought one from the ebay store "online-depot" it was buyitnow for $130 and i researched it to be the best of all the remote start alarm offerings on ebay besides the colour screen ones.
I have fitted other types (cheaper ones) and they were rubbish and unreliable.
I make a habit of leaving my car in neutral as i do for work as well. Just safer if you accidentally start the car in gear either by remote or manually.
Some cars have neutral switches but they are mainly more upmarket type cars.
Just park ya car in neutral and make sure your handbrake is tight and you should be right!

the wire just needs to be earthed and it will start aslong as it has tacho signal to alarm

they are a pain to wire but work ok

but more of a wank thing cars at auto salon would have heheheh

beware of shit ones on ebay and also ones with shit instructions

plus u might spend an hour or 2 trying to program the unit

also some of the colour pager type alarms tap into the battery light in the cluster instead of a tacho signal.

stomps, the thing is basically a neutral start switch, so yeah, as sideshow said, easy enough to bypass.

For gods sake - PLEASE DONT BUY THOSE EBAY JUNKHEAPS!!!

There is a good reason the majority of GOOD alarm vendors dont sell a remote start car alarm. They suck wang.

Furthermore, buy a decent alarm, not an ebay piece of junk. I've found most of them come from some very dubious characters - one of them used to frequent the old forums under the name "alarmguy" and "hotwrx".

OK, thats some pretty strong opposition right there.. From what i've heard its not normally the alarm itself that has the issues but the car that you pit it into.. ie.. the wiring cant take it or some shit like that..

Anyway, might give it a miss then.. I need a new one on my supra coz my current alarm is fucked, has dodgy wiring and i had to bypass the emobilizer to get my car to actually start..

What i need is something with: siren, immobilizer, central locking.. Any other cool features would be a bonus.. any suggestions..

I had a dodgy Taiwanese alarm in the celica. It caught fire.

Buy a decent Australian standards approved alarm and get it installed by someone who knows what they are doing (99% of all shops factor the cost of installation in their prices).

With the remote start things, you can actually buy sensors for manual cars. I've seen a couple of types, one is a reed switch, so a magnet that goes on the shifter somewhere, and a sensor that is mounted on a bracket nearby, so that it contacts when the stick is in neutral. Would take a bit of mucking around to get it lined up correctly. The other involves a cable which attaches to the stick, and some kind of switch, so it pulls the cable when it's in a certain position. I think it has a switch either side, so if the car is in gear, it will pull the top or bottom switch, and when in neutral, neither switch is pulled.

If you can understand what I'm talking about
