Unless you're running a nitro dragster, i can't see the need for anything more than a CDI or decent electronic igniter.
You might have to pay big bucks for a coil that works reliably at 8k rpm.
I'd hazard a guess at an old-school nitro-methanol fan?
Ok I had this guy come around the other night looking for parts for his 18rg which he is running in an histroic sprint car. We got onto the subject of an engine making good spark at 8000rpm and higher an he was dead set in his ways of telling me that to get a excelent spark at very high rpms the only way to achive this is by fitting a magnetio because electronic dizzy could not handel producing such a constant spark like the mag could?
I've never hear of this been true does a magnetio have the ability to run better than the dizzy or was he just set in his old ways???
For example i'm running msd on my turbo 18rg and never had trouble with crapy spark at high rpm.
Cheers
Alex

Hi mate, we used/use magneto's on aircraft, purely and simply for their reliability. There are no truck laybyes at 3,000 metres.
This was before the advent of HEI capacitance type ignition systems.
That being said, if you look closely at a top fuel drag car, you will see that they run magneto's, so there may be some merit to the mans opinion.
cheers Chuck.
GEEEEZ your quick there CHUCKKKY.

Id say he's half and half...... half on the right track and half set in his ways![]()
Mag's are the best in the end i guess but the quality of todays ignition setups is more than enough for 8000 rpm ....start talking about CDI and there is no rerason too wory about 9000 + with boost !unless you have a top fueler![]()
honda's dont run mags. nuff said.
It comes down to a lot of things... Magnetos are cool things, simply because of the way they can burn through stuff, but rather unnecessary. HEI distributors on a V8 at 8000rpm are marginal, and almost impossible with points (forget twin points!) Multi coil setups make it all seriously easy, and that's before moving to CDI. Also, whether a top fueller needs a magneto is another question - some argue that the ends of the spark plugs are melted after a couple of seconds anyway, negating the need for any ignition system. Also, their fuel systems etc. are hardly at the cutting edge of control (not that they need to be)
