if the gearbox out of your mates car has two startermotor positions (exhaust side and the inlet side) on the gearbox then this is more than likly the gearbox behind the 20v.

I bought my mates ae92 sx w/20v silvertop a couple of days ago the gearbox was crunching when selecting second but last night I lost first and second gear completely. I've checked the clutch and manually shifted the arms on the gearbox but it's obvious the gearbox is rooted.
The box (i'm not sure what model) has uneven length driveshafts.
I need to get another gearbox. A mate at work has a gearbox from his ae82 4ac and I'm wondering if that will work.
I've searched the forums but found nothing definite so I was hoping someone could help me out.

Cheers. I'll check his gearbox tomorrow. I noticed the gearbox in my car had a spot for the starter to go at the front like you say.
just watch your final drive gears, as a 4ac should have a taller set.
As toyota don't mark the boxes externally you'll need to find 4th using the two selectors and a bit of problem solving.
Then count the number of times you turn the input shaft to get one full revolution at the axles, and that will be your final drive
4ac AE82 is 4.059
4age AE82 is 4.313

The spanner in my avatar is actually a 16mm, that's why it's still new
source a C52? and match it up, they are pretty cheap and a few around..
there is an E series box for sale on toymods at moment also..
What is autosalon? Sounds kinda homo.

4AC box will work.. starter on the 20v is at the back as compared to the front on the other C series boxes. If you can try and sus out a C52 or C56 as the silvertop came with both of these. I think the 4AC uses a C50.. not too sure if someone wants to correct me on this.
the 20v comes with equal length driveshafts but will work fine with the ones you've got and they should bolt up to any C series box so no hassles there.
jorrs: e-series = heavy and long ratios as compared to the C series so personally i'd avoid one with teh 20v.

Thanks guys, that's great. It's sounds like this box will most likely go in for the moment then!
I'm a bit stapped for cash atm and have no wheels so this I going to be my option until i can get one of the better gearboxes you mentioned.
I'm assuming the equal length driveshafts would eliminiate some torque steer?
I thought i'd sus out some other options - JustJap here have ae92 gerboxes for $395, ae112 boxes for $495 and boxes off a 4agze for $550. But my mate still has his 4ac box for about $200
They say the 4agze boxes have bigger driveshafts and I would have to get them spliced with my existing axles! Don't know if that is a good idea!
Is the ae112 gearbox very strong - would it fit up to my 20v without too much work?
Anyway what is the best option? One of the above or something else?
Thanks.
jeez some of those are pricey ^^
im sure u can do better then those prices,
your best bet to track a C52 i have one in my ST at the moment its been strong and i like the ratios, also i thought their were a few poking around, im not sure what model the ae112 box is ?

Apparently the ae112 gearbox is the same as what comes withe the ae92 sx - has twin starter motor positions as the one that is in there has. I could put another of those in but its still nearly as expensive as the ze box (bar the driveshaft welding). I am really beginning to understand why I got the car so cheaply now.
Looks like if I don't use the 4agze box i'm gunna end up needing to to this all over again in a couple of months anyway. Looks like time for a student loan![]()
AE112 uses a C series box (C52 i believe)...
whilst the GZE box uses bigger driveshafts I don't see the point.. I haven't heard of anyone braking the standard driveshafts with a 16v/20v so why go for something stronger if it ins't required... also the e-series box will be detrimental to the handling of the car with the added weight.
just go for a C52 or C56 imo.

can allways call SSS they allways have spare gboxes from 20v's
edit: realised you live in tassie
i think justjap had c56's for about $400 a little while ago + freight to tassie. As said above C52 or 56 will work well, although the C56 has a shorter 3rd gear which is "awesome" in the 20V
I have been pruned by old man river!!!!!
Why not give a forum sponsor a call . I have many boxes.
