Well from driving it it does 50km/h on the limiter in first and that the final drive is definitely taller than the old box.

To drop replace a gearbox on an AE82 cant be much different than on AE92

    Should be about 3 hours.

Undo the clutch slave, thermostat etc and unplug wires...

Loosen wheel nuts and jack up as high as you can and put on stands, check its nice and safe, take wheels off place the wheels under the rails near the driver and passenger doors.

Get a mate to stand on the brakes, undo the inner CV's pull the shafts up and toward the firewall. Tie it up back there somewhere.

While your down there, loosen what you can of the 6 or so bolts that are around the gearbox housing.

Support the engine with a jack, under the sump (use a bit of wood as well).

Put an 2nd jack under the gearbox, make sure it wont slip away...

Call some mates, give them a coke cause they just need wait around for a bit, just in case you get flattened, but you could do with them later..

Undo the 'cross-member' remember to undo the mounts..

Loosen the Drivers side engine mount, undo the passenger side.

Check that nothing is still attached to the gearbox

Lower gearbox jack a bit and engine jack, let the whole engine tilt

Undo 6 or so bolts that hold the gearbox on, its heaps easier to get at them now

Shimmy, wobble, pry at the thing, I find that you can do it by yourself if you get the angle right by leaning over the passenger guard and hugging the gearbox. (dont hurt yourself) its well heavy and you are not in a good lifting position.) This is where your mates come in handy..

If it does not come loose, check you have undone everything... It will go with a wiggle and a bit of yelling... Its not the worst bit of the job anyway.. (You still have to get it back on!!)

    Reverse the above process...

I once found a whole list of Toyota FWD ratios, it is now gone but since we are comparing the 50,52 and the 56.

Thats excatly what i did, but i found the crossmember on the ae92 is an a$$hole. The rear mount for the gearbox took me 2 hours to get back into place and i acually had to break the press fit on one of the studs to get it in (It pressed back in when i tightened it up). My mate, whom i bought the car off, said they did it with a hoist but they needed to use crowbars to get it in.

I guess that why I thought it would be easier to lift the shell off.

Thanks for clarifying the ratios. I think all in all I like the c50 box i've got now better than the c52 box i had. (Not only because this one has sycnros)

    just a question

i've gotten hold of a AE-94 CSi that's got a 4A-FE efi motor in it.. would it come with the C50 or C52? anywhere to check??

also in terms of strength, are both the C52 and C50 the same strength? coz the box that comes with it is good... and my C52 is on the way out...

also it should bolt up to the 100kw 4A-GE right?

I reckon it's a C50 box, but you can check by either drving the car or turning the shafts to figure out what the final drive ratio is (as bobob posted above). My car does 110kmh at 3500RPM on 185/60R14 in 5th, whereas the C52 box i had before revved a bit higher at this speed.

Strength wise, I've bolted a C50 to my 20v ST and had no problems giving it plenty of abuse (just make sure to rev match going up and down gears)

It will bolt straight up to the engine, no problems. Any 4A-xx gearbox will fit any 4A-xx.

hm.. i just had a look... cbf getting my hands dirty yet

but it has two starter positions.. one in front (exhaust side) and one in the back (inlet side).. reckon it's a C52? or does the C50 have two starter positions as well?

Yeah the rear mount sucks, took me and a mate an hour to get it back in. We did a gearbox and clutch swap on his garage floor which isn't fun, have done one on a hoist it was much easier.

in my search to find out if i'm sitting on a C50 or C52 box.. i came across this... half an hour of searching to identify a gearbox...

how can you tell what a supra 5spd apart from a normal box??
a supra 5 speed is bolted into a supra, be it MA61 or MA70 or JZA70 or JZA80
a normal box isn't bolted into a supra.

it will be on the build plate of the car it came out of...

other than that....AFAIK there is no easy way of telling the C series boxes apart...

    thanks for that + rep..

    do'h i should've looked yea it's a C50... looks like they're used right up till the AE94s...

anyone got any definite idea about it being inferior to the C52? contemplating using this box as well with a HD clutch as the synchros are good in them.. for a small-port 4A-GE

the car will be a bit slower accelerating with the taller final drive ratio

not sure about gear strength though

They were used in ADM AE101s as well, methinks. The AE102s got the C52 along with the 7AFE

Well, the c50 is mated up to my 20v now, I hold it flat and wheelspin all the time, but always heel-toe double clutch. The gearbox is fine, same design, different cogs.
