Installing Gauges

Hey guys,

I have 3 gauges, Oil Temp, Pressure and Water Temp.

Any tips on installing them? They are all Mechanical.

thats a pretty vague question...
i guess you know not to install them in cabin. having oil pressure lines in cabin is not legal. (but i did it anyway)
tap the water temp near the head if you can, to give you a better indication of the temp of the head.

Yeah, i didnt know this was illegal, but there is no way ill have gauges sitting on my bonnet like a rota haha.

Gauges are only good if calibrated properly and reading true, otherwise you may as well leave them in their boxes.

I've seen a few of the newer cheaper gauges that are now flodding the market, they don't read anywhere near accurate, good for bling tho. Turning on the headlights caused oil pressure to drop in one case.

worse case scenario: cabin fire with engine running + ruptured oil pressure sender line inside cabin = well fucked situation

damn, I need these gauges when I hit the circuit! BTW, I never buy cheap! The Gauges are Omori, afaik, one of the best on the market.

You can tap the oil pressure gauge into the oil pump. it should have come with fittings but if it didn't speak to the people at pirtek or something about it and they will give you something

tap it where? i hope you dont mean drill a hole in the oil pump or anything......

And yes, they are both illegal on teh bonnet and in the cabin. But people still do it.
It important to remember not to kink the lines because this will crimp the line, making it weaker and a restriction.

the water temp line should also not be bent to hard as it can damage the line.

running an earth and power for the lighting can be achieved by using speaker wire as its already stuck together. there isnt much current draw so it doesnt have to have a big gauge wire. usually finding a power source that is on when the parkers are on is a good place to join it into.

i'd be installing electric, guages for sure if you are putting them inside your cabin. If not to save a mess and danger, but to allow calibration down the track. Most electric guages should have a way of being calibrated.

Although seems you already have them, i dont think u are going out and buying new ones are you!

So if I were u i'd read the instruction manual, sorry if thats pointing out the obvious. But every guage is different and may need to be installed in a different manner.

if youre going to put them in anyway...

id put the oil into the main oil gallery channel running along the side of the block above the sump. put a T piece on the existing oil pressure sender fitting, or usually toyota has a spare drain hole tapped and blanked off near the oil pressure sender unit

the h20 you can just get from the thermostat housing, or wherever else the existing h20 temp thermocouples are located.

again, either T piece it, or use a blanked off fitting location

Do you have to do this yourself? I'm guessing you've never done this before?
If your playing with expensive guages and its for a race car, I'd try and pay a mechanic/auto elec friend to do it for you....
I've never played with mechanical guages before so not sure if a beginner could do it.
