Default Recommendations for a GOOD 3" muffler to shut up 1JZGTE

My 1JZGTE is currently running a 3" dump pipe & mandrel bent exhaust with a single muffler, but drones like a pig and is overall just too noisy

Anybody got a recommendation for a good quality free flowing 3" muffler? Please let me know the brand, style, inlet/outlet configuration etc.

    Thanks in advance

how bout just throwing in a 3" straight thru hot dog,

do you want to run 2 muffs or 1?.....no matter what you get...3" straigh thru is going to be loud/drony.....

call your local shop, we supply and fit redback/lukey and walker..they are all basically the same, glass packed....and do the same job,

oh and the most quiet is offset offset mufflers, meaning that it enters the right side of the muff, and exits the left...(vice vesra...)......as the sound has to chnge directions,

i find that Lukey is a good muffler in a sense it quietens down the noise a bit...

but yea u have to sacrifice noise for flow.. and in the case of a 1J, i doubt there would be much difference in flow at the end of the pipe if u use straight through or off-set.. considering it's turbo and all...

erm... why not a canon with one of those removable silencers.. they do the job, when want the noise just pull the silencers out.. i've seen a lot of cars install them to get through EPA and road worthys..

From what I've seen, cannons always sound terrible - and in my opinion they look stupid too

A turbo engine with 3" exhaust can be kept reasonable with a pair of straight through glass packed mufflers, one after the other. Try and use the biggest mufflers that will fit in the space. You should be able to not strangle it, and also not go deaf, especially when there's already a turbo there.

whoops, shoulda mentioned that the offset offset is still a straight thru muffler.......

    they wouldnt restrict flow greatly...

i think your thinking of a BAFFLED muuf, where the gases can change directions 2, 3, 4 times.....(not straight thru...)...

firstly just try fitting a hotdog, will bring the noise down a few Db's and sould only cost round $120 fitted....

    cannons can be quite effective......

if you get a good one....$300+ that are glass packed, they sound nice, and deep........they are just a straight thru muff, just a different shape and polished....

if you go to AUTOBAHN and get a $70 3AAA racing shitter they sound raspy, and tinny, as they are a milo tin, and nuthing more....(every lancer has one)

I got an offset in/center out lukey "race welded" stainless muffler on my 1J, got the biggest muffler that would fit in the rear of the car. Initially made the exhaust with plans to add another Race Welded muffler to the center of the exhaust after I got it running.

I was quite suprised at how quiet it is compared to the exhaust on my old 1J, which had a 3" offset-in/center-out no name muffler and a 18" hotdog in the middle.

The only real difference in the exhaust setup on this car is the length of the exhaust after the rear muffler, and the rear muffler brand. My current exhaust has about 30-40cm of 3" tube as the tip after the muffler so it gets to the rear of the car (Wagon), the exhaust on my old 1J had a 30deg 3" droopy tip welded straight onto the muffler.

I'm still going to put another muffler in the middle of this exhaust, just to make it REALLY quiet.

    All good info thanks

1 muffler only.... don't have an option due to low ground clearance & limited floorpan room

oh and the most quiet is offset offset mufflers, meaning that it enters the right side of the muff, and exits the left...(vice vesra...)......as the sound has to chnge directions,

Awesome thanks, will look into this. Current muffler is centre in, centre out, and does have a removable silencer which would get me through a noise test, but it will still annoy the sh1t out of me on the road without it.

What did it cost for the lukey muffler JP?

Thanks, keep the recommendations coming! I'd like to hear from those running Japanese mufflers as i've heard some pretty sweet import setups. Anybody running a Jap branded muffler here?

from memory it was about $170, picked it up from an exhaust shop and made the exhaust myself.

I'd suggest a combo of a a resonator (e.g. hot dog) underneath the car post-CAT and a Lukey turbo or race muffler.

The hotdog (doesn't need to have a huge OD) will greatly reduce incidence of resonance (e.g. drone) and the race or turbo muffler (which are basically a straight-thru with 2 slight bends) will take out much of the sound.

Go find a carline or A1 muffler shop and talk to them - they sually know what they're talkign about - my local shop is run by an ex-gravel rally guy and seems to know his stuff.

I have a 2 3/4 system (post-dump thru to the rear) that reduces to 2 1/2 at the muffler - you can still hear the fuel pump over the zorst tone.

Personally, i can't see the benefit in the imported systems apart from the neato stickers and increased drone volume.
