Default lightening a flywheel, where to go?

    hey guys,

never really thought to hard about having a flywheel lightened,

now that ive got everything apart, seem like a good time to do it,....

so where should i go?, who should i see?, and has anyonegot a rough idea on price?

what sorta diference does it make to drivability?

btw, its just a stock 1g fly...

    cheers, blake

depends how much you want lightened, this will affect the effect and the expense.

it should make it feel a bit freeer revving, more "sporty" and improve acceleration. at first you might find it easier to stall up hills etc but you will get used to it.

not all stock flywheels are ok to be lightened, to test yours, support it by a bit of rope or something and give it a (light) tap with a hammer (not on any important bits)

if it goes "clang" it means its made out of good type iron, and should be ok to lighten.

if it goes "thud" throw it in the bin.

my 4age one was a clanger, i'm assuming the 1g one would be too.

oh yeah, i don;t know where you should go, but it looks like you know how to use the yellowpages.

oldschool flysheels are easy to lighten and cheap (like not much more than getting one surfaced) as they just but loads of unneccasary material on there for fun.

looking at my flywheel, it wouldn;t be easy to just remove material, as it is all functional, to lighten it you would need to mill out bits, but leave pads for the dowel pins etc.

i'm toying with the idea of machining off the back half (all the steel that supports the ring gear etc) and replacing it with an auto flexplate, but it might be less hassle to get one that is light already.

let us know what price you get quoted, and post up a pic of your flywheel!

Lightened stock flywheels and high revs are not a great combination for safety.

If you are getting it lightened ar rotary table and a mill will allow you to take weight from the outside of thye flywheel (where it has teh greatest effect) in the sections between where the hat bolts on to the flywheel face without weekening the flywheel.

Never, ever lighten a factory cast flywheel if you like your feet attached to your legs. Either fork out for an aftermarket lightweight flywheel or leave it be.

A stock flywheel can safely be reduced to around 7.5kg. If you are lucky to have a flywheel that is already dished out at the back then you cannot go much further.

If it is all metal back there then it can be dished out as Toyota has done it for the various 2T/3T/2T-G flywheels over the years.

However I would not go any further though and a ready made aftermarket light flywheel is then the go.

    Regards

    lightening any flywheel is fine!!

as long as you dont go too far and make it really weak and thats a LONG way

think about it when its lightened you remove mass from the outer diameter area as much as possably resilting in less force trying to pull it apart at high rpm

so as long as you dont take anything off the area close to the crank its fine

there are a couple of small tricks and you MUST get it rebalanced afterwards
but its an easy job on a lathe

Ive lightened dozens over the years

if you want to send/ bring it over to taren point ill do it for $50
