As long as you mount it low, you won't need a lift pump with a VL turbo item. Yes you should put a low pressure filter before it (carby style) and a high pressure one in the engine bay.

I have heard mixed reports about not needing a lift pump, those external pumps die pretty quickly if they are sucking fuel as well as pushing it! But as starfire said, if you can mount it low so it isn't doing to much sucking you should be right! But the AE82 conversion is so simple and would probably increase the life of the VL pump!

WTF is the guy talking about not running wires into a fuel tank? How does he think the stock pump works? Black magic or something?
Just go back, tell him to get stuffed and get the pump! when you extend the wires, just make sure they are shrink wrapped and there won't be a problem!
on a side note, I was at the wrecker with a mate the other week and he had the same in tank setup as me and it was getting a bit funny so he decided to replace the intank pump, took one out of an MA61, looked idential to the AE82 one(the pump, not sure about the mounting bits)? But it turned out he had a loose eath so we never got to find out for sure!
But if MA61 power windows fit in an 86 the it wouldn't suprise me if the pump does! And I would assume that a fuel pump for a 7M would pump a bit more than a 4A pump if you are thinking about upping the power!
    Good luck with it all!
    Cheers!

Yeah It made me wonder what he was thinking too..

Using the AE82 pump as well would be a good idea that might be what i do.

Just wondering how i mount the VL pump to the tank strap, the obvious thought would be to drill holes in it for a bracket but i don't know..... how did you guy's do it?

if it is for an 86 there is only one way to mount it... cable ties!
I am about to mount an external pump on mine too so would be awesome if someone could chuck up some pics of their mounting jobs for some ideas?
Love the 4ac coil bracket suggestion! Otherwise there are mounting brackets you can get off ebay, thats what I was thinking about doing?

but for $55 with postage I'd rather try the 4ac coil bracket!

hose clamps work OK to hold the pump to the bracket, use 2 and do them up tight

For my Ke25 w/4age 16v, i ran VL turbo main pump, electronic 6cyl carbi pump for the lift pump. Then for surge tank i went to bonds roll bars, gave them some dimensions i wanted and what fittings i want. They made it nice and good, only cost $70!

Got a drill? otherwise you could make up an adaptor of some sort to mount to existing brackets...

If you go the hose clamps idea, you would unscrew 2 or more hose clamps so they are completley open, slip them over one of the fuel tank straps, put the external fuel pump in place, then slide the hose clamps over fuel pump and tighten them up nice and tight!
    Cheers!
