how does the noise relate to the clutch position?
ie does it only start when you push the clutch pedal in 1 inch? if so its a throw out bearing
hello
It happens in 4th and 5th gears with the clutch out
Nope, there's nothing that'll make noise that's in common with 4th & 5th.
Is this more noticable & mainly in 4th when crusing with light throttle?
ring & pinion.

Also, what's "thrust race"????????
===================================
Also, also, I can be very wrong if my guess about 'W50' being a RWD/FR box isn't right.
thrust race = a bearing that pushes against the pressure plate when it is pushed by the clutch fork
I checked it out more today
nosie is most in second and fourth (sounds like rushing air) on higher revs there seems to be a slight ring/rattle
???
bearings...
gday
could be just the main bearings the hard surfing wears of the inside of the bearing causing it to start and sound rough and rumberly.
if the noise is in all the gears exept 4th it would be the idler shaft bearings, but has noise in all gears it would be mostly all the bearings.
throw a bearing kit in it and it'll probably be all good
Hi,
Hmmm.... which is what I have. Been doing it for a couple of years now and I must get it replaced, but I've been hanging around waiting to get funds to get the g/box overhauled and the whole lot done at the same time.Originally Posted by brett_celicacoupe

they are only about $25 for memory and an afternoons work to change it
id bet they could go for 10's of years as noisy without any problems.
its just whether you find it irritating.also depends if you drive resting yor foot on the clutch
