I've done a search here and on the old forum, but the info wasn't very clear.
From what I understand the L40 gearbox in the Hilux is available column and floor change, using external shifter linkages on the side of the box. It is otherwise basically the same as a W40/50 though, so is a W50 with a forwardish gear lever position a direct swap for the L40 assuming the Hilux is already floor change? Giant Tomato posted that the bellhousing pattern is the same so the W50 should bolt in in place of the L40. But need to find out if the gearbox crossmember and tailshaft will fit.
This is to help my brother sell his W50 to a guy wanting to replace his L40 (not sure on Hilux model number), he just can't find an L50 but we don't want to sell him a part that won't fit.

I'm a bit loathed to say what you'll need to do regarding Xmember. There are at least two different ways the gearbox mounts to the crossmember. You'll need a pic of his L40 gearbox mount and compare that to your W50 mount. I have been caught out twice before - once with regard to advice I provided (oops!) and another time on a conversion I was doing.
Sneak down to pages 66 -70 of this catalogue and you'll see what I mean. Most W50s I have seen run with gearbox mount A5197. The early W40s I have played with run mount A5018 and this catalogue suggests there may be a couple others......
Tail shaft should just slot in with no mods - they share the same output spline and I think the gearboxes are the same length. Of course, check to be sure.
L50s can be a bit tricky to find. I'm led to believe the linkages are different c/w L40 too (second hand info - I've never seen one).
