Thanks TA-022... why is it TA-022... shouldnt it be TA-028?
skiddz has a spare one, and since he works across the road from my work i'm going to pick it up at lunch time, and see if it fixes my problem (trying to avoid driving too far out of my way at the moment).

My next question is about how these facet fuel pumps actually work.
When it died on me last sunday, the pump started rattling REALLY loudly, louder than normal. I think that was when it was sucking air. After the car had died, dad gave the pump a whack with a tool of some sort and it started working quietly again. Just before I got home it was getting loud again, and there was hardly any fuel in the filter.

When I was driving to work this morning, it occassionally made loud rattles, but most the time stayed quiet.
Sometimes the fuel filter is more full than other times whilst the engine is running (like sometimes its half full of fuel, sometimes its almost empty). It seems to rattle noisyest when the filter is almost empty, and sometimes the fuel inside gets air bubbles in it.

Is this normal operation of the pump? OR should I be worried its still sucking air somewhere?

Where is the pump located in relation to the tank?

Engine bay I know its not recommended but the pump worked there for 10 months no problems, and i have heard those facet solid state pumps are quite capable of working there fine.

I was going to locate it near the tank soon, but I should be able to get it working fine where it is, and if theres something wrong with it and i have to replace it, it would be annoying if it was at the back.... easier to fix any problems where it is now.

Well, they may work fine there for a limited time, but in my experiance this will stuff them. The facet style pumps are better at pushing fuel rather than sucking. IMO this is why your pump is stuffed. I always mount these pumps as close to the tank as possible, and lower than the tank itself. It creates a syphon effect to the pump from the tank, and as the pumps are good at pushing fuel rather than sucking, there is a lot less strain on the pump itself.

I always mount the pumps this way and have never had trouble. The pumps get loud when there is no fuel in them, so I'd say it's sucking capabilities are at an end because of where it has been mounted. Get some fuel line and simply run the feed from the tank to the pump somewhere in the boot, (assuming you don't have the floor mounted tank) then run the outlet of the pump back to the line above the tank.

Ok, thanks for that If my pump is giving me problems now, does that mean its stuffed, and i should buy a new one and remount it near the tank? Or should it sort it self out again when I move this one?

I would probably have a go with the existing pump mounted close to the tank and as low as the base of the tank and see how it goes. If it works it saves you $80 or so. But if it stuffs up, you already have the new holes and pipe etc, to mount a new one easily.

Dragging up an old thread as I have a few questions, my new TA22 seems to be doing the same things

It keeps cutting out, but not to the point that the whole car dies, like my previous experiences in 51LII. But guess what, fuel pump is in the engine bay. Replaced the paper filter after the pump last night and drove it and it went fine, but this morning cutting out happened again. But it still drives, just cuts out or splutters when you put your foot down a bit.

im not sure on the pump's brand, but it has a pressure regulator next to it and a gauge, its reading 4psi. When i open the throttle up (free revving when parked) the needle may fluctuate between 3 and 4 really fast, or sit on 4. If it is the fuel pump giving me issues cos it doesnt like the engine bay, would you notice a change in fuel pressure as it cuts out? Im guess no, as you have all that fuel in your bowls?

i will be relocating it to under the tank on the weekend if i get time, but i just want to be sure its not something else, like the carbies (45mm webers)...

    cheers
