belated reply: thanks thunderbird2! much appreicated, awesome photos!
update:
Well i thought i might add a few words here, i am getting ongoing questions from many ppl about the conversion, and it seems they are mostly seeing this thread and going from that!
After the first few months, it turned out that the original motor i had, still had issues with the head gasket. Im not certain exactly how it blew again as i havent yet pulled that motor apart, but i suspect that i didnt surface it well enough, or the heads were actually warped and the new gasket just held it back for a while.
In any case, i swapped that motor out for another one, which i got from a wrecker this time, and was running in a camry a couple days before i took delivery, so i didnt strip it right down or change head gaskets this time. As it turns out, the first motor was a fair bit different (tho apparently the same year model, '96) leading me to think (esp. based on the lack of EGR) that the first motor was actually a jap import.
To save effort, i swapped over the entire EFI system including the intake and exhaust manifolds from the first motor onto the second, got that running again in about a month, this is the motor you see pictured above!
That has now been going strong for the last 5 months, without missing a single beat. I cant stress enough how much this conversion was worth all the effort.
I still get people asking me why i did this instead of a turbo, and all i can say is, whats original, unique or interesting at all about putting a 3SGTE into an MR2? Toyota themselves did that! And if you go ahead and modify that 3SGTE, there will still be a great many people with more money who did it better than you.
The only issue that still persists, one that i havent really been bothered to do anything about, is a constant CEL from the lack of speed sensor signal (camry ECU doesnt like MR2 signal from the dash) which basically causes idle issues sometimes resulting in a stall at roughly the time where the ECU switches from warm up to normal running. Some electronic whizz-bangery should sort this out, im just too lazy to figure out how!
Also an LSD would really, really, really be nice.

Hey, If you go for a hunt on jaycar you should be able to find yourself a 555 timer kit to send a speed signal to the ecu. If its anything like the JDM 4AGE's it'll retard the timing at top end slightly if doesn't have the signal
so tempting to bolt one of these engines up to my auto... trd s/c or twin turbo, yea baby!!!![]()
i am assuming that you used the mr2 gearbox........
if not how did you go with CV's,

Wow...inspired! That UK video completely sold me. It could take 15 seconds to get to 100km and I wouldn't car, that sound is amazing! Well...ok, I would care. But it's so cool.
Now: curiosity questions:
Have you had this on the dyno?
Will a 1MZ fit, or is it distinctly different...and is it worth the extra $$$?
Is the turbo gearbox significantly heavier?
Access: Has the cramped rear side of the engine bay caused any problems so far?
I won't be able to start this project for a while, but when I do I'll look around for a cheap (or a really nice) SW20, and buy a complete camry to do the conversion from.
-RM.
Edit: there's a 3k SW20 on autotrader at the moment...Someone grab it!
Clicky!
thanks guys!
fibrewizard: used MR2 S54 that was already in the car
mullett: thanks mate! dyno - no, but maybe at the upcoming dyno day1MZ - absolutely, apparently some minor isses with the gearbox mounting bolt holes and it needs a different engine mount bracket and is trickier to wire, but worth it to save weight with teh all-alloy V6, particularly if you just want to keep it stock. i have a friend who is doing a vvti 1MZ - turbo box - not enormously. i havent compared them directly tho. access - none whatsoever. i have only had issues getting the idle valve off for cleaning - i drilled a couple of holes in the rear firewall
but if you were savvy you'd replace the bolts with allen heads beforehad
the complete camry will save headaches, but they cost a fair bit in running condition, so its a big upfront cost. it doesnt save THAT many headaches, imo.
again i will state - forums.twobrutal.com <--- everything you'll ever need to know about the conversion
