    Default sc12 clutches etc..

been a while since i've posted a thread here....

i've got a map sc12 with the 120mm pulley on it, swapped it over with the afm 125mm pulley sc12 in the lil feral yesterday. the s/c is noisey at idle, but it still boosts well (specialy combined with the 175mm crank pulley).
i was about to pull it out tonight and put the old one back in, was going to put the 120mm pulley onto the original s/c.
i gather the early and late sc12's snout doobie is the same and clutched pulley assy is interchangeable?

i drained the oil and on the lil magnet doobie on the drain plug there was metal filings.

but when i went and looked at my original one it had metal filings on the drain plug too.

as i was pulling stuff off i noticed after removing the belt that the outer pulley on the s/c was noisey when turning it. hrm... i pulled the little plate doobie off the front and tried to see in. hooked the belt bacl up and started the car. when i earth the wire on the s/c clutch so it's locked on the s/c is much quieter. there still is a little noise from the s/c but bugger all. take the earth off so it free spins again and there that damn noise!

is there a bearing or something in the pulley assy that can fail? the noise now to me is all from the pulley assy, not the s/c itself like it thought...

does anyone have a breakdown pics of the map s/c pulley assy?

as i might be going to perth this saturday i might lock the s/c clutch on and put the abv back on.

    thanks.

There is a large bearing in the outer pulley, I'd be fairly surprised if it failed. One the plus side, they are a bearing you can buy (I think I get one for about $30 or so). It's probably just got some crud build up inside the assembly.

Have a look around www.mr2oc.com there used to be exploded pictures from Toyota on the site last time I looked. It might just need a good clean out.

What kind of noise is it mate?

When I drive my car there is a ticking noise with engine speed that starts at around 2-2500RPM....It starts before the SC light comes on, on the dash. Its quite loud but is not there when it is idling...only under load.

I was hoping it would just be a tensioner that is on its last legs but I'm not all that convinced anymore!

How long you going to be in Perth for? AW11 meet up FTW!!

it's a horrid rumbling type noise, made it embarrasing to drive out of the shed for a test drive.
it doesnt sound like something that's caused by a crud build up, bit deep a noise for that.

    thanks for the pic toof.

i might be heading up to perth on saturday (would like to go this arvo, but doubt i'll be ready), there's a cruise on sunday i'm interested in going on. i have to be on site monday morning for night shift that night, so it'll be a early start monday morning to drive to site.

looks like i'll just manualy lock the clutch for now, pull it all out next break and get a new bearing from my uncle (has a bearing shop).
does anyone else notice a metal buidl-up on their drain plugs?

damn it. got a switch wired into the neg trigger of the clutch so i can have it run all the time. s/c is still noisey, i'm sure last night the noise basicaly went away when i engaged the clutch. but then it was late and i was tierd.

too bad, i want to go to perth tomorow. i guess if it seizes or something sinister i'll have to just let it run on the clutch and unplug it.

mine makes a scraping, grumbling noise when engaging low in the revs, and when it disengages...

seems worse now than a year ago, i think it is crud build up as above.

    Can you get a recording?

Feral, the bearing inside the pulley is in action constantly because it runs on the boss which bolts to the SC housing - always stationary. So i wouldnt think you should get a noise which comes and goes from that bearing.

The bearing at the front of the SC on the clutched lobe is a possible culprit - it is loaded when the engine breathes thru the SC - like when you free rev it under the bonnet.

Reece, from memory there is a cap which has screws retaining it to the clutch face, then one bolt and a surclip. Then the clutch face comes off.

reece, it's been a while since i pulled the clutch set-up off a sc12, but i am sure there is a center circlip or large nut that holds on the part you have pictured.

mic, the s/c itself is shagged. and the bearing noise from the clutch is constant, wether engaged or not.
i've put the old s/c back on now. i guess oneday i'll pull the shagged one apart and have a looksee at it all, my uncle owns a bearing shops....
