    Unhappy HandBrake Cable on Toyota MR2 AW11 1988 ....

    Hi All...

I'm in desperate need of a new Handbrake cable for the Toyota MR2 AW11 1988, and was wondering if anybody on this list either has one, or could point me in the right direction of where I could find one.

I've found a couple of places in the US, but everytime I enquire, they indicated that theirs is not the same as ours due to LeftHandDrive and RightHandDrive!!!!!!

I've been searching for one for the last week or so, and I'm very close to going to see if toyota can suply one, although it's gonna cost me lotsa $$$$$.

    Thanks in advanced....
    MIKE.

which section of cable are you after? i cannot see a difference in the 2 cable that go to each caliper being different to that of a lhd compared to rhd.

are yours just seized or snapped? if seized whip it/them off and put one end in a vice on the bench and pour/spray copious amounts of inox or some other penatrating fluid on the inner cable. work it, in and out, more fluid, etc. thats how i got to reuse my seized cables.

Get your yellowpages out and you will find a few places in Perth that make control cables of various sorts. Take your old cable and outer to them and they will fix it or make you a new one.

^^ yea there would have to be people that would make them, i'm sure there was in brisbane.
but if they as cheap from mr T as toof said, and still available, you might as well get from there.

I doubt they would be any more than what Toyota charge....I seem to remember when I had a new speedo cable made when I had a Datsun 200B it was < $50...I would think that the handbrake cables wouldnt be to much different.

On an OT point...did you chop your engine lid yet?

when i needed one for the grey two it was <$100 and avaliable, the red two has also had one replaced and was similar money straight from the big T.

i investigated getting a custom one made up and it was going to be about $80 but i went for the genuine part. it was going to be next day whgere the custom was a week or so. and i figured cant beat genuine quality.

    Hey All....

    Thanks for your help...

I will check out Toyota first to see if they have any, and then take it from there.

The cable hasn't actually snapped, but it feels like it gets stuck somewhere inbetween the hand cable and the outside. (Feels like one of the Steel strings has snapped, and doesn't allow the cable to glide freely)

    Thanks again...

PS: I have just bought a 20v Blacktop 1/2 cut , which I'm planning on installing soon... the 1/2 cut is on it's way, but will post on this forum to keep all updated.... Just tooling up at the moment, and only thing missing is an engine hoist.

    Hey All....

    Well, I feel pretty stupid....

Went past toyota today to enquire about the Handbrake cable and it only cost $55 from Toyota!!!!!!!

Well... Here I am enquiring from various wreckers what it would cost to get this part $95, checking out ebay site, where they average about $75-$95 !!!!

Anyway... just thought I'd share it with all of you... by the way, there are only 3 more left within Australia, as this one that I ordered is ex-east, so it's about 2-3 days lead time.

Happy, happy, happy... get to drive my 2 again soon....

    Thanks again All....

Will keep you all posted regarding the 20vBT conversion which is on it's way...

    MIKE.
