Get some coarse sandpaper and roughen it up.

It does the same as a skid on some cement or a hot mix road. It roughens them up and removes a layer but doesn't really "revive" them.

bit of a random one, but when i was karting i heard demestos worked at softening the tyres...
I might try that on a set of hardened old tyres I'm going to throw out just to see what happens

Sorry, my term skid = burnout, not skid as in brake lock up

I was just thinking of the lazy and more entertaining way anyway

WD40 does "revive" rubber components that have hardened but i don't know if it would have a positive effect on tyre grip? Probably not?

hmmm interesting....I did a quick search and I couldnt see anything on spraying tyres with WD40 though I did happen to see in a motorbike forum a discussion on using it clean chains. There was the general consensus that if it gets on some seal bikes have it attacks the rubber and it fails. Someone also said they saw it put on tyres before and it appeared to attack the tyres as all this "black stuff ran off of it" .....Could it be that there is the appearance of rubber being 'revived' because it is being attacked and has gone soft?

Im sure I have read somewhere about it somehow improving tyre grip though....

When fitting rubber grip to a push bike handlebar lots of people use WD40 to slide it on. Within about 10 min the grip is stuck to the handlebar.

The WD40 website had a massive long list of things on it that it could be used for and I don't ever remember seeing it could be used to increase grip on tyres but it did mention is would revive on rubber.

EDIT: the WD40 site says it is safe for rubber application. Numberous forums say that apparantly it is not good for rubber.

The manufacturer says it's fine, heresay says it's not. Make up your own mind

Yeah the '2000 uses for WD40' list....sif I'm going to read that

I have also seen WD40 used to put a tyre back on a rim or inflate it (cant remember which) but they did something silly like squirt a can of it in to the wheel/tyre and then ignited it, the expanding gas inflated/popped the tyre back on the rim

Very interesting, might be worth a go

Nothing, just a matter of getting it is all.

Still, if WD40 works that's a nice cheap option. Not something i'm looking to do on a regular basis, just a once off to get me to this event.
