solex's jetted for a 2TG would work, run a little rich but not too much. Each throat filling a cylinder of 333.3cc on a 1G vs 400cc on a 2tg. you needn't bother with a rebuild on the solex's if they're in ok condition. Also 40mm delrottos are cheap. Make sure you get a DCOE manifold though then you can bang on DCOE throttle bodies at any time.

P.S: Save that idea start buying 1.1/2" or 1.3/4" SU carbies. they're cheap. Run 3 or 6, (though getting all 6 to play ball might be a challenge.) Would sound an look the business. and haev lightning fast throttle response.

Hey jordan,

With the troubles I have been having with the stock ecu and AFM at the moment..... I could be tempted, sorely tempted to run carbs. However with the prospective tuning jollies in regard to the carbs I think I may just let that one go. One thing I have sussed out is that carbs are not necessarily a more economical option either to buy, to install or to run...

Still love the sound though and I have had a few nice T series motors running solex's. Datto's with webers etc

Another note, yes it's true the 1ggeu is a little small for the size of the cars we run. Still, with the XX (MkII) we are 227 kg's lighter than the MkIII.... That's two hefty blokes or one really big person!

Yes they are expensive, very expensive. I'll PM this Japanese guy I know (hes got XX with 1GGTE but should have an idea) and Ill get back to you on more precise cost..

My tacho goes to 9000, it goes "orange" (warning I guess

) at 7200, then red at 7750-7800... I rarely take my engine that high though, shes too old, and theres no power there anyway..

I know what you mean about not wanting massive yo power, I dont want 200rwks or anything silly that I could never put to the ground, but heres my case for GZE,,

* You can still retain the awesome handling of the car due to the lightweight 1G block, only extra weight would come from sc, which is minimal at best..

* You can switch the s/c on and off at liberty, meaning you can have regular 1G power for around town, and 9psi of boost at the flick of a switch

* Its a cheap swap.. you can get decent 1GGZE for around 800 bucks, you only have to change sump, mounts and thats it (for XX anyway) maybe 1200 for all up (including some new seals etc for GZE)

* massive power gains are to be had from intercooling the GZE which from factory never had one, also the cam swap i mentioned should help the higher end power..

Just to put this in perspective, with good tyres 200rwkw will not be a problem, with decent tyres 250rwkw will not be a problem, with performance tyres 300rwkw will not be a problem.

200rwkw can be put to the ground with great ease.

ill agree with that, 200rwkw is not much power on todays tires
I run cheap shit on the back on the ke30 and unless you crack it hard into gear it wont spin

Don't be fooled by paper figures. The 1GGZE is a very different beast to the 1GGE and I should know as I have had both in the Celica. Loved the 1GGE and some ways I wish I never took it out but the power got the better of me. Having read through the posts (and this is obvious anyway) it really all depends on how much your budget is. If you have 4K then do a tricked up 1GGTE or even a 1J conversion. If you are only looking at a few thousand though then I strongly believe you will be disappointed with spending the money on the 1GGE. You can’t substitute that rush of forced induction. I wouldn’t swap my 1GGZE for a GTE any day but then I’m not chasing HP. For a 1000kg car the GZE is a great package and well worth considering (if you can find one that is).

BTW, the guy who made the comment about swapping the NA cams into the GZE – Don’t. Tried that and it does not produce any gains and in fact was detrimental to fuel economy. The GZE cams are correctly matched to the engine. Like he said though, spend your time fitting an intercooler instead. Switching the blower on and off is a waste of time too. All you will do is use more fuel. Supercharged engines do not behave like NA engines with no boost due to the cam timing and lower comp ratio.

If we talk about tyres, we can talk about suspension and handling mods etc etc. I think that what Andy is saying is that it is what HE would not want to have 200rwkw that HE would not want to put to the ground. Thats cool, he may have a number of reasons that work just fine for him. I can dig it.

I kind of know what he means... 200rwkw may not be much to you guys who do dyno days and get honourable mentions but to your average streeter thats plenty

. It's a rare combo where you have a car tuned for 200 to 300 kw that is good on the street and the track.

I'm thinking of a new direction, the compression (9.1.1 or 9.5.1) on the ol 1GGE and 1GGEU is low enough for low boost applications so I'm thinking of running either a SC or a turbo... probably a SC at low boost. As it runs an AFM style setup and if I run reasonably low boost say 6-8 psi then it's feasible that I may get away with using the factory ecu with a upgrade in the fuel supply system. The only thing is that even low boost applications tend to stretch con rod bolts.... hmmmm

Grant and Andy, u are dead right fellas, the GZE has a lot going for it, especially being able to run the car off boost unless you feel like a squirt, would be ideal for what I'm talking about above.

I don't know if I have mentuioned this in previous posts but living in WA we are a bit starved for decent imported motor packages... we usually end up getting them freighted over from over east. In my case I then have to get anything I need freighted an additional 1300kms. Just had a little whinge, whimper and moan.

I understand the applied physics of veichle dynamics cruz

i was just blasting out an exaggerated example of high power that I would never need in my situation, perhaps 200 was a little low for toymods though

Thats interesting.. and thanks for clearing it up, it was something I had just thought of myself, and a celica xx owner in japan confirmed that they are interchangable, but wasnt sure on the benifits.. So it diddnt help the mid range power? I guess with the GZE engine, cams are designed to be more effective down low, so I guess changing this to the higher GEU cams interferes with the ecu and genrally the flow of fuel and exhaust? Thats kinda depressing

The was no real difference in power on the road. Because the 1GGE cams have more overlap than the SC cams some of the air/fuel mixture is blown out of the cylinder under initial boost accounting for an increase in fuel used. It revved a bit harder but by then the efficiency of the blower is tapering off so you get no real net gain. It doesn’t have any effect on the ecu as it only relies on air mass moving through the AFM.

The 1GGZE has a lot of potential as a hard street engine. As previously mentioned it is limited by not having an intercooler (outlet temps are ~90 degrees) and fitting a front mount is not all that simple as the radiator must be moved forward in the conversion reducing the available space. Many years ago we did manage to mount a 13B IC and ran the thermo’s on the engine side but it looked shit. I will eventually get a custom air/ water IC made to go where the battery sits.

So this space problem would not plague say, a Celica XX, where space is plentiful?
