thanks guys, the respose has been excellent and very helpfull. as for teh damage to the engine head, i was hoping that it should be ok, as stated the 4age is a non-interferance engine.

sorry when i said i took the belt that drives teh cams off, i ment i just removed the cover of it so i can see the belt. and yes teh tooth are chewed off the belt, so thats what causing the rotor in the dizzy not to spin.

as for doing it myself, because i dont have a good understanding of how to insure i get teh cams aligned properly, it will be left to a professional to get it done.

thanks again so much to those who replied.

all you need to do is line up the marks on the cam gears with the marks on the backing plate and then the other mark on the crank shaft pulley that lines up a mark on the oil pump housing, slip the belt on, adjust tensioner put the rest together and there you go.

if you do the t/belt yourself and have adjusted the tensioner once you should always loosen it and retighten a second time, after you have turned it over twice to make sure the timing is correct..

If the timing belt goes at high rpm then there is always a chance of bending valves. Although it is a fairly free running motor as i stated, damage can still be done. I had to rebuild a 4age (every valve bent) a few months ago for this exact reason.. Non interference is never absolute.

before you do anything, why not just a get a 14mm (?? it is one 1g ) socket and torque wrench, or breaker bar of decent length and try turning each cam over individually using the bolt the cam pulley bolt.
if they both turn, then something weird has happened to your timing belt.
if one doesnt it should explain the reason for the stripped teeth.
i know when i had a cam seize the motor would not turn over, the timing belt held up.
however im sure if this has happened at high revs things may have been different...
