Basically if i build mounts to fit my 165 motor in then later down the track bought a 185 motor would it be a simple bolt out bolt in situation?
Yeah they will both bolt in the same.

well i have a 165 motor and im gonna chirp in and say that the power differences between 1st and 2nd gen are pretty small, and that my 165 motor stock goes harder then an 185 motor stock and all i have is turbo work done, and it is quite happy to run 12 psi also the WTA cooler doesnt suffer from heat soak issues as on the 185 motors... also i ran 14 psi on my motor after having the headgasket done and the like and i have to say my car was one quick lil car (its an st162 ) just tryin to keep the 1st gen rep up

    Respekt!!!!
Thankyou my good man, you have made me feel much better about going to all the effort to install my "lower" power 3S-GTE

10hp pff i'l just remove the air filter to gain back the 10hp

Except if it's a JDM engine, then it's more like 35 HP. Gen I in KW are 140 and gen II JDM are 165-7 if I'm not mistaken.

    Check this link for differences:

Yes a Gen 2 will bolt in where a Gen 1 was mounted. It will need a complete rewire though as far as I know.

Having seen several different generation 3S's on the dyno and driven a few myself I still can't say the Gen 1 is any good. They just don't seem to turn numbers even comparable to the later engines and feel extremely strangled and uninspiring to drive. Sure TA22-3SGTE is making big power out of one but it isn't stock doesn't run stock management or stock turbo.

In an AW11 a Gen 1 will be reasonably spritely but it won't blow your socks off. My 3S powered AW11 makes 200rwKW on 10psi and I am planning on getting it tuned for another 10psi asap. That is pretty damn far from a stock engine though, and it's a Gen 3 origonally.

    is that all?? HAHAHA

Hmm well i think if i could achive those sort of times in a 3S powered MR2 i would be more than happy

I think my decision is to install the engine i have currently then if for some reason i cant get it to perform as i would like it too, i will simply upgrade it later.
My first aim will be to run 11.88, just so i can beat TA22-3S-GTE heheh

    Cheers

Hmm well how about the old scenario "yeah mate i got a V6 commo mate and its hella fast" ok so a V6 commo is obviously the definition of slow.

    Lets now define reasonably quick?

And well i think TA22-3S-GTE has already defined fast for us

that would define it quiet nicely but that engine is a freak. not to knock the gen 1 in any way but the average gen 1 wont take that kind of shit. but thats not to say there a bad engine, but the gen 2is just a beter alternative for much the same money, newer more powerful etc etc.
