    Default Camry Immobiliser Question!

I need the help of some of the Electrical Gurus!

OK guys, my mates mum has a 1996 Toyota Camry Vienta and its got one of them factory immobiliser installed... Now the problem comes in with the remote controll. The battery is going dead, and toyota reacons that they cant replace the battery, only replace the remote... Now the problem with that is that the thing that would usually 're-program' the new remote, (which just seems to be a two strips of metal in the glove box) doesnt work... They want 700$ to replace that!?

What i was thinking is thats bollocks, if i open the remote im sure i can put a new battery in and, worse case scenario is sticky tape the remote back together, thus saving 700$. My only hesitation is, when i remove the battery is it going to loose this 'programming'?

I would have thought that Toyota would have been using a more analouge type settup in their Camry's..?

Cheers to anyone who can help, and anyone who tries...

open the remote and find what battery you need, but you will have to keep the battery connected (of course) so that any programming is not lost.

if you can buy a replacement batter, buy 2 of them.

hook up one of the batteries in parallel to the terminals (while the old battery is still connected) with wire or foil or whatever.

then you can remove the old battery and install the new battery while the alarm is still being powered (backed up)

then remove the wires and backup battery and put the remote back together.

funny how my auntie has one of those factory alarm things, and the remote doesn't use a battery (or so they say) and the remote is impossible to open without a hacksaw and elbow grease.. they told me it's a magnetic signal thing.. (which i think is bull coz the remote can't send a signal without a source of power)..

anyhoo can't you use the key? it does the same thing yah? when i unlock with the key the lights flash, doors open and car can start anyway..

well its bollocks what they says about no battery. Ive opened it up, its deffinetly got a battery, its a CR2032 lol. 5$ from anywhere lol...

Wether it works or not is another question... It clips apart with a bit of force, but will prolly need to be glued together... Or taped together, depending wether you think the battery will out last the car or not...

If you open a Camry of that era without using the remote (ie using the key), you have to wait half an hour before you can start the car - the immobiliser signal comes from the same remote as the central locking, so if the remote is dead the immobiliser won't let you start until half an hour after opening the car. This is to prevent people from smashing open a window and trying to hotwire the ignition - they can do that, but they have to wait the 30 minutes, during which time their break-in is most likely going to be evident (what with the alarm screaming and all)

They are shifty they are, they tac weld the battery to the terminal, so it becomes very difficult to remove the battery while its got constant power. So once i had punched holes through the battery and accidently lost contact with the terminal. I said well no point trying to keep it now. So the remote was without power momentarily and it still works with the new battery now...

Well atleast it locks and unlocks, we will soon tell if it starts

    Cheers guys,
