    Default Water Temp Sender

    Hey all,
still sorting out all the teething problems, and with the newer aluminum radiator ive come across a ball breaker of a problem. the bottom radiator seems to be getting cut by the alternator fins. but in any case i found that the car temperature didn't seem to improve with the change of radiator.
the following items have been used for the cooling system
    - long life anti boil anti freeze anti corrosion coolant
    - standard 82 degrees thermostat
    - standard 3tg water pump
    - 10" thermo fan (which will probably be upgraded to a 12" seeing that i have the extra space/ price depending though)
the thermo fan switches on, and the blades are facing the right way so that isn't the problem.
the cooling system has been drained and the radiator has been taken out as the bottom radiator outlet has to be moved to help make the hose clear the alternator. a brain wave on the excessive heat could be the temp sender being wrong. the water temp gauge in the car is the standard ta22 gauge, however the temp sender is for a 3tg. pulling out the old 2tg sender if found that they looked similar, however slightly different. the 2tg had stamped on the side 10K while the 3tg had 2J
the questions i would like to ask are
    - Is there a difference with the 2 senders?
    - If so would it cause the water temp gauge to read differently?
    - Would it help the heat if i got a thermostat that had a lower opening temperature?
sorry about the novel but i suppose it give you a quick background story, any help is always most appreciated
    Cheers
    Mario

Measure the resistance of each temp sender. (try a few different temps)
Most Toyota's I have seen have been internally identical, even if they are externally different.

Does she overheat while idling? or while driving?
If its only while idling, then your thermofan is the issue.

A colder thermostat wont do a thing. The 82degC one is fine.

Yeah i find it to be a problem only on idling, on a hot day... the problem i see though is that i'm still running the car in, and not driving it hard and the temperature is already an issue. on the topic of fans, the car is set up with a front mount cooler in front of the radiator. if i had to go a single fan option, would my best bet be putting it between the radiator and the intercooler? or still between the block and the radiator?
is there a noticeable difference in having a fan sitting between the front mount and radiator, then another between the radiator and block?

Make sure you have at least 80% coverage from a fan setup.

Most thermo's (without a proper shroud) cover something like 40% of a radiator, if not less.

You are much better off with a clutch fan and shroud if you cannot setup thermo's properly.

I'd say that is where your problem lies.

Space is the biggest issue with the engine bay and that is the reason why i dropped the clutch fan that was originally bolted to the 3tg. as for getting a shroud to suit the newer radiator how would i go about that?

Basically you make something like this that spaces the thermofan at least 10-15mm off the radiator itself, and forces all the air passing through the radiator to pass through the thermofan.

this is my funky Fan shoud I made up for the twin 14" DC fans

As long as you allow about 15-20mm and seal the sides as best you can,. it will draw through the entire radiator, not just the area covered by the fans..
