Default Fired once and not again!!! help!!

Hey guys helping out another toymods member by trying to get his engine conversion going.

    Its a 2ZZ into a MRS spyder (had a 1ZZ in it)

I've managed to wire it up and get it cranking over etc, then i managed to get it to run, but once i switched it off it will not start again.
It appears to have no spark.
I assume it had no spark in the first place which is why it wouldnt start at all, but then randomly for no reason got spark and has now lost it again.
It ran for 5 seconds or so before i turned it off myself and now wont go again, after changing nothing at all. Ive got the coil packs and plugs out and there is defianatly no spark. But the coil packs do have power!!!

How do i check the feed from the ecu to coil packs? There is 4 wires to coil pack. Pos 12V, neg, and then 2 from ECU. One seems to have 5 volts and the other seems to have nothing! What should it have??? I assume this 4 wire should tell it when to spark?

    Cheers
    Matty

    Oscilloscope!

I have one in Balcatta which you can borrow if you promise to be careful with it.

It graphs electrical signals so you can see them in real time. Where is the car you are working on?

Maybe the coils got overloaded and now are broken. Not creating spark.

im in high wycombe, i'l keep playing and see what happens first.

Its not getting any spark at all, might have a look at the alarm actually, although it appears to be disarming, maybe it isnt......good idea.

The thing is why did it get spark once? very random.
Could it be dodgy ECU? hopefully not, i dare say they would be hard to come by...

Does any1 know what the fourth wire does? coming form ecu to coil pack?

    Cheers

just a little something i dug up matty -

Using the ignition (IGt) signal, the engine control module (ECM) turns on and off the power transistor inside the igniter and switches on and off the current to the primary igniter coil. When the current flow to the primary coil is cut off, high−voltage is generated in the secondary coil and this voltage is applied to the spark plugs to spark inside the cylinders. As the ECM cuts the current to the primary coil, the igniter sends back the ignition confirmation (IGf) signal for each cylinder ignition to the ECM. If the ECM does not receive the ignition confirmation signal (IGf) after sending the ignition signal (IGt) it interprets this as a fault in the igniter and sets a DTC.

could be one wire for primary one for secondary coil... or data in and data out from the primary to the ecu..

    Good idea Hamgatan.

Wildsupra, do you have any way of checking if the ECU has logged any fault codes?

sounds like i need to trace the return signal wire to ecu and see if anything is happening there then. You say if it doesnt recieve a signal back it sets a DTC. Wot is a DTC??

Jasper i havent checked any codes, firstly because im not sure how to on this model MR2 and if i did i dont have a list of what the code would mean. Although i think it will be one of those OBDII type diagnostic anyway which i dont have the tool for.

There is a few un knowns because there is an adaptor harness in there for the ECU which my mate bought, i can ony assume that is correct. But the fact it ran has got me puzzled. If it still hadnt fired i'd confused but maybe not as much eheheh.

Ok I know this is a stupid suggestion before I even give it. The parents used to have an MS and to start it needed to be in neutral and have a foot pressing on the brake pedal.

yep hear wot ya saying mate, however i have bypassed that because it is now a full manual car.
I assume that only prevents the car from cranking though?? Cos it still seems to power up everything else. All that did was when ya put ya foot on brake it earthed the starter relay. that has been overcome already.

diagnostic troubleshooting code i think... or in plain english an error code

each individual cylinder has its own individual error codes that are thrown back by the secondary coil.. buggered if i can remember what they are though. let me check it when i get back to work tomorrow..

to check the codes bridge out the te1 and e1 terminals in the diagnostic plug(rectangle plug with a sticker on the inside of the cover)
then count the flashes on the engine light
