Guide: Using Modifying MS85 hubs to fit MA61 etc

This came up in another thread recently so I spent a few mins tidying up the document that I put together for myself when I was modifying my MS85 hubs to fit my MA61...

The short story is that MS85 hubs can fit MA61 with some machining and different bearings. Bear in mind that the bearings required are much, MUCH more expensive than the stock MA61 etc bearing kit...and they can't be bought in a kit to my knowledge...

but does the 'extra' cost of the bearings and labour in machining outweigh the extravagent price of MS65 hubs these days? (unless you can get them free )

Its not the price of the ms65 hubs its the fact there just arent any around. Supply and demand of ms65 hubs = big $$, but if there is no supply ......

in discusion with wilbo, this method of machining the hubs is labour intensive.

To get a machining shop to to the job and supply bearing would be around $300-400. The bearings are nearly $100 and the machining requires lots of checking during the job (if you remove too much metal, the bearing cups are not captive and you end up with a hub-shaped paper-weight).

So it's still cheaper to locate MS65 hubs (last i saw was $100/pair + postage).

The bearings are macho more expensive, i think the bearings were around $130 from memory!

If you have access to a lathe, and you get the hubs for what they are worth (next to nothing ) then the extra cost of the bearings is offset by the money saved on the hubs...still the individual will have to decide if it is worth it

The only reason that I did this was that I was sent the MS85 hubs as MS65 hubs I was pressed for time to get the car back together and on the road (for last years Toyota Nationals )...

Yeah, im paying $60 for 1 hub from a local source.
Thank god I managed to get 1 from a wrecker a few months back.

However, having thrown out a set of ms85 and z31t hubs.. made it an expensive excercise

But atleast this is another option as ms85 hubs are plentiful.

Slighty off topic, but i think very relavent, what wheels will suit?
It's 5x100 isnt it? So all the ford wheels will "fit" but the newer ford's will be the wrong offset?
What mm spacers are needed to make new ford (EA etc) wheels fit properly? and will this be the same as skylines and any other cars?

The stud pattern is 5x114.3. The same as Ford, Nissan, etc

Ford wheels will fit, pre AU wheels will have offsets that should work. Post AU will need spacers. (btw EA is OLD Ford, not new )

Offset is pretty well the same as factory MA61 (maybe +- a few mm, nothing major).

17x8 + 35 wheels need an ~13mm spacer to clear the struts with 235/45/17 tyres.

Most of this can be found for simply searching for info on MS65 hubs....

also peoples, MS112 and MS123 Hubs are also the same as MS85 therefore they will fit with this modification.
