Lightbulb RA28 EFI fueling setup idea

    Hi all,

Well, i guess its not just an idea, because im doing it

Anyone familiar with RA28s knows there is nowhere decent to setup EFI conversion fuel gear (pumps, surge tank, etc) under the car, so normally it has to go inside or in the engine bay.
Both of these options are not the best; in car leads to fuel smell problems in the cabin & rego/engineering problems. In the engine bay is a possible fire hazard and sometimes there just isnt room for it.

So, my plan is to make room under the car for the fuel pumps & filters, and to have the surge tank protrude through the floor (to give it height/volume), but with no tubing inside the car.
Ok, so its not an easy-fix option, but its an option that should work well.

This is the area ill be modifying:

The plan for the surge tank to keep all lines outside of the cabin:

    After some angle grinding:

I should be able to fit in ~110mm diam surge tank in the area against the shock mount.
The bottom of it will be just above the panhard rod mounting bolt. I havent decided how tall itll be yet though, but probably ~300mm which will bring it up to around the height of the top of the shock mount.

Thats what ive come up with so far...

I think ill cut out further back tomorrow, removing the section around the fuel filler hole as well. With a raised box over the area, itll give room to mount the pumps, etc between the edge of the fuel tank and the floor.

    Ideas/opinions?

i did a similar thing on the GA40 except i had the entire tank in the boot and the metal pipes proceeded through the floor. they were all sealed where they went through the floor so no chance of fumes coming through.

    homemade surgie.
5" truck exhaust offcut, some oxy-acet gas and some brazing wire. cost nothing to make

i think its a very elegent way of solving the problem

Where did you mount the pumps?

one is on the underside of the boot floor. the other is mounted to the fuel tank mounting strap.

so yeh, both outside the cabin

since im not fully clued up on the idea what is the purpose of the surge tank
if you have a decent flowing efi pump and decent size fuel lines would there still be a need for one???

Because a fuel tank setup for a carb doesnt always pick up fuel.

i just cut this area out due rust haha, I think I'll be wary how I fill it in with this knowledge. How would the set up work if you just had a pick up pump or a pump after the surge tank, ie a set up without a 2 pumps...

You cant do it without two pumps.

If you took out the same piece of metal as i did, make sure you reinforce the panhard rod mount as thats what the lower area in the corner was for.
