Default Tapping engine noise under load

    Hi guys,

I need help from you guys again, I would take the car to mechanic but everything shut down for the Xmas holiday.

Basically the car for is making a tapping type noise from the the exhaust side of the engine when I put the engine under load. It sounded kinda like a Harley Davidson motorcycle. The noise increase with rpm when I lift off the sound goes away as if nothing is wrong. When I rev the engine at idle it doesn't seem to make the same noise, it is much louder when engine under load.

I haven't been thrashing it or anything the only thing I've done is change oil and filter I don't know what oil it was using before, it is currently running the Castrol Magnatec 10w-40. Could the oil be the cause of the noise? I'm thinking that it maybe an exhaust leak as the exhaust system never really been that good to start off with it used to leak at the O2 sensor bolt(what does exhaust leak sound like?).

Here is what I've done so far, check oil level (seem ok at 3/4), check spark plug all clean, tighten the bolt holding the exhaust manifold to the engine as it wasn't on that tight before.(seem to quieten down abit). What more can check now? try new oil?

FYI the engine is a standard Ae92 Map 4agze.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks you

You're on track here, and sound like you've partially fixed it. Check you haven't blown the exhaust gasket and make sure all those bolts are done up to the recommended torque settings. Also check that leak round the O2 sensor, and anywhere else that might be leaking.

most like the manifold gasket, once they have worn loose the old shitty gasket is brittle and falls outa place....

if you replace the gasket, check for any crack in the manifold aswell,

Now it start to make sense, could the old bits of gasket fell out creating a gap between the manifold and the engine. Could this be why the exhaust bolt was loose??

Where can I buy a new exhaust gasket? are they the same as standard 4age gasket? and when I replace them do I need special gasket glue or anything?

Just called up Toyota, they need a model number and Frame number of the car. Anyone have a Frame number for late model ae92 with map 4AGZE?

    Thanks guys

pull of your heat sheilds first before you order the gasket
if the manifold is the same as the 4a ae92 they have a habit of cracking in half and this would be bad to find out after you pull your car apart

in which case you will still need the manifold gasket - so no great loss (except for the trip to the wreckers for replacement manifold should it be cracked/broken).

210rwkw - not bad for a smelly 3TGTE running pump fuel.

Thanks for the tip, I've check the exhaust manifold already no crack. Is there any thing special that I should be aware of when install the gasket? do I need any high temp glue or anything? from my understanding it is just take out the old one and put in the new?

It was the exhaust gasket, as you can see from the pic the gasket material is missing at number 3 and 4 cylinder. I got my gasket from an AW11 Mr2 they all the same for 4age apparently except the 20v due to bolt hole location. Anyway I'm happy now, can finally go full throttle without worrying anymore.

    Thanks for all your helps
