bigmat, here is what I suggest,

    1. Clean with wax and grease remover,
    2. Spray with metal etch primer, and
    3. Spray with your choice of chassis black, or spray with primer, then any colour of your choice.

If you spray with chassis black, you might want to spray over it with sound deadener, this is a thick bitumen substance, a special 10mm nozzle gun is used.

    cheers Chuck.

underbelly is bare metal. paint on the top side how much to pay some one to do it. as a rough guess. not to much rust in body.

I would say it is prob $1000 at a rough guess but not 100% sure as it could be more. If you had the right stuff its something you could do yourself and all you would need to do is lay a tarp down, mask up the areas your planning on painting and all holes in the underbody that go inside the cabin/engine bay/boot. Just be sure as mentioned above to use a mask and ensure your in a well ventilated area as you can end up pretty high. Also give yourself some breaks from spraying.

You dont need to prime to spray primer before stone guard and this can be sprayed onto even a surface roughed up with scotch brite. Ideally you would use just stone guard which is black but i think can be bought in o few other colours and then if you used black you can spray the colour of your car over it.

This stuff helps to sound deaden and also doesnt chip away like paint does. Paint by itself is not the best choice for an underbody on a car that is actuallly driven, on a show car or something it would be alright.

Stone guard is also often used in wheel arches and some cars like mx5's have it along the bottom of the sides of the cars - ie bottom 8 inches of front guards and doors. It leaves an orange peely looking finish due to its thickness.

depends how dodgy the painter is as to how much he charges. I have sprayed the under of a body before, and do advise you use a full face sheild rather than just safety glasses, as I ended up with some in my eye before.

make sure you have an air compressor thats up to the task (uber crap $100 special compressor will struggle badly and cause it to take ages), put down dropsheets/tarps (as mentioned) and get the car as high off the ground as possible. As mentioned mask up anything you dont want covered as this shit sticks. I always like to etch prime first, but not necessary. A Schutz gun is definitely a must, and I would suggest to get the gooiest crap you can get your hands on, not just the uber crap special stuff. Try PPG etc, they may have a product thats of a high quality.

This stuff is not hard to spray on, and is very forgiving to inexperienced users, unlike painting topcoat.

Also, you will get covered in crap, so dont do it in your sunday best. Pretty sure its already been mentioned to put on coveralls. The disposable ones over other coveralls is a good idea. Some garbage bags over your shoes will stop them being forever stinky. and washing up gloves will reduce the time between spraying and cracking a beer.

If you can get some 500W floodlights under the car after you have finished, these will help to dry the goo.

The Body Shultz gun, or blurp gun, does have a trigger, but is basically on or off, giving very little control.
Grab a handfull of the airhose, and bouble it back, just like you would when you want to stop a garden hose. Careful regulation of the handfull of hose, will ensure a fairly professional underbody coat.

3M Bearcote, is what I used, cleans up with turps.

For bare metal, use etch primer, followd by chassis black, and then the sound deadener.

Got a price from my panel brater friend and he said its worth about $100-$150 in materials and then a few hundred to paint it up so it should be round $500 or so if you were to get someone to do it for you.

Ive been coating the bottom of my RA28 with a tar/sand mix (called Tetrosol from memory).
Ive just been brushing it on with a very strong paint-brush.

At the rate im going, itll probably take me another 2-3hrs to get rest done (spent ~30mins so far).
Probably easier in the end for a one off than getting the special spraying gear, etc.

It is messy, i end up cleaning it off my skin with petrol... but all part of the fun
